Your essential Baldur's Gate 3 guide for beginners – covering key mechanics, maps, quest walkthroughs, boss tactics, and powerful equipment.
Baldur's Gate has been a big name in RPGs forever, but you don't need to know the old games to jump into Baldur's Gate 3. This beginner guide is here to help you survive Act 1.
The game's huge, and on my first run I wandered in like a fool, got my whole party wiped at the Goblin Camp, and had to reload three hours of progress. Once you get maps, quests, bosses, and gear down, it gets way easier. I've lost plenty of parties there, so let me save you the pain I went through.
Get these basic rules in your head before you start exploring. They'll save you more reloads than anything else I can tell you.
Baldur's Gate 3 is turn-based. That means you can take your time. You have an Action, a Bonus Action, and Movement every turn.
You can also shove enemies, jump, hide, and use the environment. Don't just attack every turn. I see new players do this constantly — they spam the attack button and wonder why fights drag on. Throw enemies off cliffs, knock them into chasms, and use high ground. The cliff shove alone won me fights I should have lost.
When you rest at camp, you get your HP and spell slots back. A long rest uses some camp supplies, but the game gives you plenty of food and drink.
If you're struggling, rest. You also get important story scenes in camp. Don't skip them. I skipped half of them on my first playthrough and had no clue why my companion was mad at me.
This is not a game where you just kill everything. Talking can open quests, unlock trading, and even let you avoid fights.
Check every icon on your map and every NPC in a village. Some of the best quests start with a random person. I once walked past a quest giver three times before I realized he had a marker over his head.
You are not stuck with your class forever. If you find Withers, he can let you change your class for gold.
So stop worrying about a "bad build." Try something simple like Fighter, and change later. I spent my first 10 hours panicking that I'd made the wrong choice, and it turns out nobody locks you in.
The map can feel massive, but you only need to know a few key regions in Act 1.
This is the tutorial ship. You wake up here after the mind flayer ship picks you up. You can fight enemies and grab loot, but the main goal is to reach the Helm and escape.
You can find optional gear like the Everburn Blade if you're brave, but it's fine to leave early. I usually save before the final fight because it's easy to die here — the ship doesn't wait around.
After the crash, you land in the Wilderness. This is the big Act 1 hub. It connects to the Emerald Grove, the Blighted Village, the Goblin Camp, and several side areas.
Unlock every Waypoint you see. Waypoints are fast travel points that let you jump around the map. Trust me, you'll want them. I spent hours running back and forth before I learned to click every glowing stone.
Later in Act 1, you can go deeper. The Underdark is a dark underground area full of dangerous creatures. The Mountain Pass is also an early exit route.
Both lead toward the next act, but they are optional. If you see a warning about moving to a new area, finish your current quests first. I lost a chunk of side content to that warning on my second run.
The most important Act 1 questline is "Save the Emerald Grove." Here's a simple path you can follow.
After the ship crashes, follow the path toward the Emerald Grove. You'll see a gate under attack by goblins. Help the tieflings defend the gate.
After the fight, talk to Zevlor, the leader of the tieflings. He'll ask you to deal with the druids.
Go inside the Grove and explore the inner area. Talk to Kagha, the acting druid leader. You can also talk to Nettie, the healer.
She'll tell you that Halsin, the real leader of the druids, might have answers. Halsin isn't in the Grove right now. He's at the Goblin Camp.
The Goblin Camp is through the Blighted Village. You can sneak in, use persuasion, or pretend to be a True Soul. The safest way is to talk your way in.
Once you're inside, don't fight everyone at once. I made that exact mistake and got flattened. You need to find three leaders: Priestess Gut, Minthara, and Dror Ragzlin.
Halsin is trapped in the Worg Pens. If you free him, he'll help you deal with the goblin leaders.
He can make some fights feel easier, but he's not a bodyguard. You still need to make smart choices.
You can kill the leaders in any order, but you should fight them one by one. More on that below.
After all three are dead, the goblin threat is broken.
Go back to the Emerald Grove and talk to Zevlor. The quest resolves, and you'll get a solid reward. The grove is saved, and your story moves forward.
The first big bosses are not impossible, but they will mess you up if you rush them. Learn from my corpses.
Commander Zhalk fights the mind flayer at the helm. If you want his sword, attack him while the mind flayer is still alive. Use Shadowheart's spells and your best attacks.
When he dies, you can loot the Everburn Blade. But don't wait too long. The ship crashes after a few turns, so grab it and run to the transponder.
It's a nice weapon, but it's not worth losing the run.
Gut is the goblin priestess. She is in her room in the Goblin Camp. If you talk to her, she may try to control you or trap you.
The best move is to attack her before she calls for help. Close the door behind you so other goblins don't join.
If you have a spellcaster who knows Silence, cast it around her to stop many of her spells. Focus fire and she goes down.
Minthara is a very dangerous drow paladin. Her smite attacks hurt.
Don't fight her in the middle of a big room full of goblins. Try to lure her away or catch her alone. Use ranged damage and keep your weak characters far back.
If she reaches your melee character, use potions and heals. She's tough, but she doesn't have a huge HP pool.
Dror is the hobgoblin leader at the end of the Goblin Camp. This is the fight that wipes most new players.
First, kill the goblins around him before you attack. Close the big doors to slow down reinforcements. Use the high ground if you can find it.
And if you see a war drum, destroy it. Goblins love to hit war drums and call more friends, but you can stop them. I learned that one the hard way.
You don't need perfect gear to beat everything, but a few items are worth grabbing early.
The Everburn Blade is a great early weapon. It's a heavy two-handed sword that adds extra fire damage to your attacks. You can get it from Commander Zhalk on the Nautiloid.
Save before the helm fight, attack him, and loot the blade. It works well on Fighters and Barbarians.
This is a legendary mace in the Rosymorn Monastery area. It's not easy to get, but it's one of the best weapons in the game.
You have to solve a stained glass puzzle and deal with a trap. Save before you touch the mace. If you don't disable the trap, it can explode.
The mace is worth the hassle because it can carry you through Act 2.
When you enter a new area, press Alt on PC to highlight lootable items. Check every vendor. Magic items with blue or purple borders are often worth buying.
Even a simple +1 weapon can be a big upgrade.
I still make some of these mistakes on every playthrough, but you don't have to.
A lot of players save their camp supplies because they think long rests are rare. They aren't. You will find food everywhere.
If you keep going with low spell slots and low HP, you will die. Rest more. I hoarded supplies for 15 hours and wondered why every fight felt brutal.
The Goblin Camp is a boss area. If you attack everyone, you're going to get swarmed. Use stealth, pick fights inside rooms, close doors, and destroy war drums.
You don't have to be a hero right away.
Baldur's Gate 3 loves vertical combat. Get your archers up high. Push enemies off cliffs. Use barrels to blow things up.
The environment is a weapon. If you only click attack every turn, you're making the game harder.
The game lets you save almost anytime. Use quicksave before big fights, hard dialogue checks, and traps.
Reloading is fine. It helps you learn the game without restarting the whole run.
Your journal tells you what to do next. If you're lost, open it and read the objective. The map marker will point you toward the right zone, but the journal usually tells you the exact job.
Use it.
No. Baldur's Gate 3 happens a long time after the old games, but the story is fresh for new players. You can start with this one and understand everything. This Baldur's Gate 3 guide for beginners is enough.
Fighter is the easiest. You can wear heavy armor, hit hard, and you don't need to learn many spells. If you want a spellcaster, Warlock is also simple because Eldritch Blast is strong every level.
Yes. If you find Withers, he can reset your class for gold. Early game builds are not permanent.
Yes. If you're stuck, leave and come back later. You don't have to fight everything. Sometimes the best move is to go level up, get better gear, and come back with a plan.
Now get out there, save your game, and take your time. That's the real secret to Baldur's Gate 3.
