Overview

The Thaniel portal fight in Baldur's Gate 3 is one of Act 2’s nastiest optional encounters. It’s part of the Lift the Shadow Curse quest, and it starts when you help Halsin open a portal into the Shadowfell to rescue Thaniel, the spirit of the Shadow-Cursed Lands. The game doesn’t warn you properly: the moment you tell Halsin you’re ready, the portal opens, Halsin steps through, and waves of shadow creatures try to destroy it.

This guide covers the exact solution to that portal defense. It is not the later Oliver hide-and-seek portal in the House of Healing—that’s a different headache. Here, your only job is to keep the Portal to the Shadowfell alive for roughly four rounds while Halsin retrieves Thaniel. If the portal hits 0 HP, Halsin is lost, the quest fails, and you lose access to him as a companion. No pressure.

Before you can trigger this fight, you need to finish the setup. Talk to Art Cullagh at the Last Light Inn. He’s the sleeping Flaming Fist who mutters about Thaniel. To wake him, you need Art Cullagh’s Lute, found in the House of Healing in Reithwin, usually on a table in the operating theater near Malus Thorm. Play the lute for Art, and he’ll reveal that Thaniel is trapped in the Shadowfell. Halsin then asks you to meet him at the beach north of Last Light Inn. That’s where the portal opens.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

  1. Complete the prerequisites. Talk to Halsin at Last Light Inn. Find Art Cullagh. Get his lute from the House of Healing. Play it for Art. After he wakes, Halsin tells you to meet him at the shore north of Last Light Inn. Do not go there until you are fully prepared.

  2. Prepare before you talk to Halsin. This is the secret that saves runs. The fight begins immediately after dialogue. Long rest first. Respec if needed. A strong party for this fight includes Gale for AoE control, Shadowheart for Spirit Guardians and radiant damage, Wyll for Hunger of Hadar, and a frontline bruiser like Karlach or Lae’zel. Your Tav can be anything, but crowd control is king.

  3. Pre-buff like a paranoid wizard. Cast Aid, Heroes’ Feast, Longstrider, Death Ward, Protection from Evil and Good, and Warding Bond before triggering the portal. If you have a Moonlantern or the Pixie Blessing from Dolly Dolly Dolly, make sure you’re protected from the Shadow Curse. The beach is outside the Last Light Inn’s safe bubble. Without protection, you’ll take damage every turn.

  4. Position your party before dialogue. The portal spawns in the center of the beach. Enemies come from multiple directions—the waterline, the shadow-cursed path, and the rocky edges. Put melee fighters near the likely spawn points. Put ranged characters on high ground. Place summons around the portal like a living wall. Cast Spirit Guardians on Shadowheart and park her near the portal. Drop Hunger of Hadar or Wall of Fire on chokepoints. Spike Growth, Sleet Storm, and Plant Growth are also excellent.

  5. Talk to Halsin and start the fight. Halsin opens the portal and steps through. The Portal to the Shadowfell has about 100 HP. It cannot be healed. You must survive four rounds. Halsin returns after the fourth round. You do not need to kill every enemy—just keep the portal alive.

  6. Handle the waves. Round one usually sends fast shadow mastiffs from the waterline. They will beeline for the portal. Burn them down first. Round two brings shadow-cursed needle blights and vine blights. Needle blights are ranged, vine blights can entangle. Round three adds a shadow-cursed shambling mound and more blights. Round four is a final push, often with wraiths or additional shadow creatures. Use AoE, radiant damage, and summons to hold the line.

  7. After the fourth round, Halsin returns with Thaniel. A dialogue triggers automatically. Thaniel is weak and says he’s not whole—Oliver has his missing half. The quest updates to “Find Oliver.” Halsin takes Thaniel back to Last Light Inn. You can then head to the House of Healing for the next portal encounter, but that is a separate puzzle.

Tips and Strategies

  • Pre-buffing is non-negotiable. You cannot buff mid-dialogue. Cast everything before you tell Halsin you’re ready. Heroes’ Feast alone is worth it for the HP boost and poison immunity.
  • Summons are your best friends. Conjure Elemental, Animate Dead, Spiritual Weapon, Flaming Sphere, and Ranger companions soak attacks and block paths. Even a bad summon is a body the enemies waste a turn on.
  • Control the chokepoints. The beach has narrow paths. Put Hunger of Hadar on one side and Wall of Fire on the other. Enemies will either die or waste turns trying to get through. Sleet Storm knocks them prone and breaks concentration.
  • Focus shadow mastiffs first. They are fast and hit the portal early. If you let three mastiffs gang up on it, the portal can drop in two turns. Use Hold Monster or Command: Halt if you can.
  • Use radiant damage. Spirit Guardians, Moonbeam, Divine Smite, and Guiding Bolt shred shadow creatures. Many have vulnerabilities or at least no resistance to radiant.
  • Shove is a secret weapon. The beach has water and cliffs. You can shove enemies into the water for instant kills or at least remove them from the fight for a turn. Karlach and Lae’zel are great for this.
  • Speed potions and Haste. Give your main damage dealer a Potion of Speed or cast Haste. The extra action can clear a whole wave. Elixir of Bloodlust is also fantastic.
  • Stay near the portal. Do not chase enemies across the beach. If you leave the portal unattended, a stray blight will kill it. Fight in a tight circle around the portal.
  • Save before talking to Halsin. Always. If the portal breaks, you will want to reload instantly.

Common Mistakes

  • Not preparing before dialogue. The fight starts the second you say yes. If you’re not buffed and positioned, you’re already behind.
  • Forgetting Art’s Lute. You cannot trigger the portal without waking Art Cullagh. The lute is in the House of Healing. Get it first.
  • Ignoring Shadow Curse protection. Without a Moonlantern or Pixie Blessing, your whole party takes damage every turn. That damage adds up fast during a four-round defense.
  • Bringing only single-target damage. Waves of enemies will overwhelm you. You need AoE, crowd control, and summons.
  • Letting the portal get surrounded. If enemies attack from three sides, you cannot block them all. Use terrain and AoE to funnel them.
  • Chasing kills. The portal is the objective. Killing a straggler across the beach is not worth losing the run.
  • Wasting turns after Halsin returns. Once he emerges, the fight ends. You don’t need to kill the remaining enemies. Just survive until the dialogue triggers.

FAQ

Q: Can I heal the Portal to the Shadowfell? No. The portal has a fixed HP pool and cannot be healed by spells, potions, or items. Your only option is to prevent damage. If it reaches 0 HP, Halsin is lost and the quest fails.

Q: How many turns do I need to survive? Halsin returns after four rounds. You do not need to kill every enemy. Just keep the portal alive until he steps back through with Thaniel. After that, the fight ends and dialogue begins.

Q: What happens if the portal is destroyed? Halsin dies inside the Shadowfell. The Lift the Shadow Curse quest fails, and you lose him as a potential companion. There is no way to revive him from this outcome. Reload your save and try again with better preparation.
