So you're hunting the Infernal Rapier in the House of Hope in Baldur's Gate 3. Good call — it's one of the nastier rewards in Act 3, and a lot of people either miss it or trigger the worst possible version of the run.
The good news: you do not have to finish Raphael's big boss fight to walk away with it. The bad news: it's tucked in Raphael's personal bedroom, right next to Haarlep the incubus. So you're still sneaking into the devil's boudoir and dealing with that mess.
I've run this route enough times now that I've got it down. Let me walk you through the fastest path, how to handle Haarlep without turning a quick loot run into a wipe, and the dumb mistakes I keep watching people make.
This rapier is basically a cheat code for Charisma-based melee builds. A normal Rapier is a Finesse weapon, so you'd normally lean on Dexterity to hit. The Infernal Rapier says nope — it uses your Charisma modifier for melee attack and damage rolls instead of Strength or Dexterity.
Sounds small until you actually think about it. Most melee characters burn points on Str or Dex just to connect. This thing lets you dump those points elsewhere and still smack people clean. That makes it absurdly good for:
Warlocks especially — if you're sick of spending an action binding a Pact Weapon every morning, this rapier just behaves like one that never goes away. Simple, boring, reliable upgrade for any smooth-talker build.
The House of Hope is in Avernus, but you're not hiking your party through the Hells to reach it. It's accessible from the Lower City in Act 3. Still, don't waltz in half-prepared.
Recommended level: 11 or higher. A few House of Hope fights get genuinely nasty, and that's before you accidentally aggro Haarlep or Raphael.
Gold: Roughly 5,000 gold if you want the clean Helsik route. You can steal from her or do the ritual yourself, sure, but paying is faster and way less likely to end badly.
Party setup: Bring someone with high Perception and high Sleight of Hand. You'll want to sneak the main hall and pick a few locks if you're after all the loot. Also bring someone who can actually wield a Rapier, or the weapon is just pretty decoration.
Save before you enter: This isn't a throwaway "be careful" line. The House of Hope locks you into some brutal decisions. Drop a manual save before you talk to Haarlep so you can brute-force dialogue options without committing.
New player warning: Do not show up empty on spell slots and healing potions. You'll feel that mistake within two rooms.
This is the route I run. It gets you the weapon early and avoids accidentally kicking off the final House of Hope fight.
Get to the Lower City and find the Devil's Fee shop. Helsik runs it and has the Hells connections you need. Tell her you're after the House of Hope and she'll offer to open a portal.
Easiest play: hand over around 5,000 gold. Once she's paid, the portal goes up. Head upstairs, walk through the glowing arch, and you're in Avernus, dumped right at the House of Hope entrance.
Short on gold? You can lift the ritual items from her shop or basement. Be warned — that can turn Helsik hostile. For 99% of players, just pay.
You'll start at the top of a big hall. You do not need to murder every imp in the building. Move carefully, sneak if you have to, and work your way over to the map area labeled Raphael's Boudoir.
That's the bedroom wing. It's usually on the same side of the main hall as Haarlep. Spot an incubus lounging around in a fancy bedroom? You've found it.
Leave the Orphic Hammer alone for now. That item is what triggers Raphael's final showdown. Grab it first and you've painted yourself out of the quiet exploration route.
New player warning: Do not touch the Orphic Hammer until the boudoir is fully looted. That thing is the endgame trigger.
Here's where it gets sticky. Haarlep is Raphael's incubus, just chilling in the boudoir when you walk in. He won't jump you on sight, but he will start a conversation.
You've basically got two real paths:
Agree and you'll sit through a scripted scene. Nothing game-breaking — but remember this: if Haarlep survives, he can show up during Raphael's boss fight and turn it into a mess.
Want a clean Raphael fight later? Kill Haarlep now. Just make sure your party isn't running on fumes before you start.
With Haarlep dead or distracted, comb the bedroom. The Infernal Rapier is in the boudoir itself. Check the furniture around the bed and the little display tables scattered around the room. It sits there like ordinary loot, so the name pops up when your cursor rolls over it.
I walked right past it on my first run because I was hunting for a locked chest. It isn't always in a chest. Check weapon racks, tables, shelves — grab it when you spot it.
Paranoid? Pop into Turn-Based Mode before looting. You get free time to scan the room without Haarlep or any leftovers reacting.
New player warning: Save before you talk to Haarlep. Save again before you start looting if you're nervous. Manual saves are the only friend you have in here.
I keep watching people blow this run. Here's what to avoid:
Mistake 1: Grabbing the Orphic Hammer before looting the boudoir.
The big one. The Orphic Hammer is why most people come here in the first place, but the second you grab it, Raphael notices and the final fight kicks off. No Infernal Rapier yet? Now you're fighting Raphael while trying to detour back to the boudoir. Don't. Bedroom first, hammer second.
Mistake 2: Fighting Haarlep when you're not ready.
He's not a pushover. Walk in hurt, out of spell slots, no potions, and that fight can spiral fast. Short rest or chug something before you touch the conversation.
Mistake 3: Leaving Haarlep alive and then fighting Raphael.
Surviving Haarlep means he can crash Raphael's boss fight and turn it into pure chaos. I've seen players skip him and then regret it when they're juggling both demons at once. Not comfortable with that? Kill him now.
Mistake 4: Assuming only Warlocks can use the Infernal Rapier.
Anyone with Rapier proficiency can wield it. Paladins, Sword Bards, multiclass Fighters — it all works. The only real bar is wanting to hit with Charisma instead of Str or Dex. Don't leave it on the floor just because your class isn't a Warlock.
Got it? Equip it right away if your character has the proficiency. Warlocks lose their minds over this because Charisma-based attacks stop depending on Pact of the Blade.
Sword Bards get to stack Charisma and Dexterity while still landing clean Blade Flourish hits. Paladins love the synergy too — Charisma feeds both your spell save DC and your melee damage.
And hey, it pairs great with a shield. Rapiers are one-handed, so you can block in your off-hand and still rake in all the Charisma-based melee benefits.
Do I have to fight Raphael to find the Infernal Rapier in the House of Hope?
Nope. The rapier is in Haarlep's boudoir, before you ever start the final Raphael encounter. You only fight Raphael if you grab the Orphic Hammer after looting the weapon.
Is the Infernal Rapier better than other endgame rapiers?
Depends on your build. Charisma-focused? Yeah, it's fantastic. Almost no rapiers in the game let you run Charisma for melee attacks, so it's a standout for Warlocks, Bards, and Paladins.
Can I get the Infernal Rapier if I'm not a Warlock?
Yes. Rapier proficiency is all you need. Martial classes and Bards get it naturally. Not a spellcaster? Multiclass into Paladin or Sorcerer and the Charisma attacks still work.
Will killing Haarlep make the House of Hope harder?
Not really. Dropping Haarlep before Raphael's fight means one less body in the final encounter. Just know Haarlep himself can be a rough scrap if you rush it. Take your time and use the room.
Stick to this route and you walk out with the Infernal Rapier early, dodge the worst of the surprises, and enter the Raphael fight holding a weapon that actually fits your Charisma build. Just remember — loot the bedroom before you go anywhere near the Orphic Hammer. Future you will be glad.
