Refined Eitr is the magical lifeblood of Valheim’s Mistlands era.
Refined Eitr is the magical lifeblood of Valheim’s Mistlands era. If you want to craft staves, summon skeletons, throw frost and fire, or wear Eitr-weave armor, you need Refined Eitr. You do not find it lying around. You make it by building an Eitr Refinery and feeding it Sap and Soft Tissue.
The full chain looks like this: find Ancient Roots in the Mistlands, build a Sap Extractor on them, collect Sap, farm Soft Tissue from Seekers and Infested Mines, then build an Eitr Refinery to turn those ingredients into Refined Eitr. After that, you build a Galdr Table and spend your Refined Eitr on magic gear.
This is a build guide, so we will focus on what to build, where to build it, and how to keep the process running. The key structures are the Sap Extractor and the Eitr Refinery. The main materials are Black Marble, Yggdrasil Wood, Dvergr Lanterns, Sap, and Soft Tissue. The main threats are Seekers, Seeker Soldiers, Gjall, and angry Dvergr if you steal from them.
1. Prepare for the Mistlands.
You can enter the Mistlands earlier, but to mine Black Marble properly you want a Blackmetal Pickaxe. That means defeating Moder, building an Artisan Table, constructing a Black Forge, and crafting the pickaxe. Without it, Black Marble mining is painfully slow or impossible with lower-tier tools. You will also want good food, poison resistance, and a portal network near the Mistlands border.
2. Gather Black Marble.
Black Marble is found throughout the Mistlands in ruined bridges, Dvergr towers, giant arches, and ancient structures. Mine it with your Blackmetal Pickaxe. You need 10 Black Marble for a Sap Extractor, 20 for an Eitr Refinery, and another 10 if you plan to build a Galdr Table. That is 40 Black Marble for the full magic setup, plus extra for walls and defenses.
3. Gather Yggdrasil Wood.
Yggdrasil Wood comes from Yggdrasil Shoots, the glowing green branch-like trees scattered around the Mistlands. Chop them with an axe. You need 5 for the Sap Extractor, 5 for the Eitr Refinery, and 5 for the Galdr Table. Gather more than you think you need, because Mistlands building projects eat it quickly.
4. Collect Dvergr Lanterns.
Dvergr Lanterns are the annoying bottleneck. They are found in Dvergr outposts, often hanging from chains or mounted on structures. You can destroy the lanterns to get the item, but Dvergr are neutral NPCs and will turn hostile if you damage their property. You can also get lanterns by killing Dvergr mages, though that is a tougher fight. Each Sap Extractor, Eitr Refinery, and Galdr Table needs 5 Lanterns, so a full setup costs 15 Dvergr Lanterns. Plan a few raids on Dvergr camps, or lure Seekers into them and loot the aftermath.
5. Find an Ancient Root and build the Sap Extractor.
Ancient Roots are the massive, twisted roots protruding from the Mistlands terrain. The Sap Extractor must be placed on an Ancient Root, not on the ground. Its recipe is 10 Black Marble, 5 Yggdrasil Wood, and 5 Dvergr Lanterns. Once placed, it slowly produces Sap. You can collect the Sap from the extractor. It will fill up over time, so check it regularly or build a portal nearby.
6. Farm Soft Tissue.
Soft Tissue is dropped by Seekers and Seeker Soldiers in the Mistlands, and it can also be found in Infested Mines. Infested Mines are the underground dungeon-like structures in the Mistlands, often guarded by Seekers and Dvergr. Bring a shield, a good weapon, and plenty of stamina. You need 1 Soft Tissue for every Refined Eitr, and you will need a lot of Refined Eitr for staves and armor.
7. Build the Eitr Refinery.
The Eitr Refinery recipe is 20 Black Marble, 5 Yggdrasil Wood, and 5 Dvergr Lanterns. Place it in your main base or a dedicated Mistlands crafting outpost. It does not need to be near an Ancient Root. In fact, it is better to build it near your Galdr Table and Black Forge so you can craft magic gear immediately.
8. Refine Sap into Refined Eitr.
Interact with the Eitr Refinery. Add 10 Sap and 1 Soft Tissue. The refinery will process them into 1 Refined Eitr. Collect the output and repeat. If nothing happens, check that both ingredients are in the input slots. Sap alone will not refine. Soft Tissue alone will not refine.
9. Build the Galdr Table and craft magic gear.
The Galdr Table costs 10 Black Marble, 5 Yggdrasil Wood, and 5 Dvergr Lanterns. It unlocks magic crafting. You can spend Refined Eitr on the Staff of Embers, Frost Staff, Staff of Protection, Dead Raiser, and Eitr-weave armor pieces. This is the payoff for the whole refining loop.
Build a Mistlands outpost around your Sap Extractor.
Ancient Roots are usually deep in Mistlands territory. Instead of running back and forth, build a small fortified camp. Use Black Marble walls, a portal, a bed, and maybe a few wards. A single Gjall can wreck an unprotected extractor, and Seekers love to wander into your business.
Use portals for Sap and Soft Tissue.
Sap and Soft Tissue are generally portal-friendly under default settings, so you can move them back to your main base. If you use custom portal rules, check your world settings. The goal is to keep your Eitr Refinery near your Galdr Table, not necessarily near the Ancient Root.
Do not fight Dvergr unless you must.
Dvergr are neutral. You can often sneak into a Dvergr outpost, break a lantern, and run. If you do fight them, be ready for shields, magic, and group aggro. Sometimes it is easier to lure a Seeker or Gjall into the camp and let them weaken each other.
Farm Infested Mines for Soft Tissue.
Infested Mines are the best concentrated source of Soft Tissue, but they are dangerous. Clear them slowly, use ranged attacks, and bring a portal for emergency escapes. Seeker Soldiers hit hard, and Gjall can poison you from above.
Keep the refinery close to the Galdr Table.
You will be moving Refined Eitr from the refinery to the Galdr Table constantly. Put them side by side. Add a Black Forge nearby too if you want a one-stop Mistlands crafting hub.
Check the extractor often.
Sap Extractors fill up and stop producing once full. If you ignore them for too long, you waste real-time production. A quick portal trip every few in-game days keeps the Sap flowing.
Forgetting Soft Tissue.
The Eitr Refinery needs both Sap and Soft Tissue. New players often dump in 10 Sap and wonder why nothing happens. You need 1 Soft Tissue per 10 Sap.
Placing the Sap Extractor on the ground.
It must be attached to an Ancient Root. If you cannot place it, you are not aiming at a valid root. Look for the thick, twisting roots that rise from the Mistlands floor.
Trying to mine Black Marble with an Iron Pickaxe.
Black Marble requires a Blackmetal Pickaxe. That means Moder, Artisan Table, Black Forge, and the pickaxe recipe. Do not sail to the Mistlands expecting to mine it with early-game tools.
Angering every Dvergr camp.
Dvergr Lanterns are tempting, but Dvergr are tough. If you need 15 Lanterns, plan your thefts. Sneak in, break one lantern, and leave. Or kill Dvergr mages only when you have backup.
Building the Eitr Refinery without a Galdr Table plan.
Refined Eitr is only useful for magic crafting and Eitr-weave armor. If you have no Galdr Table, you are just hoarding a material. Build the full chain.
Ignoring base defense in the Mistlands.
The Mistlands is not a safe place for exposed crafting stations. Seekers, Seeker Soldiers, and Gjall will attack your buildings. Wall in your refinery and extractor, and keep a portal nearby.
How much Sap and Soft Tissue do I need per Refined Eitr?
You need 10 Sap and 1 Soft Tissue to produce 1 Refined Eitr in the Eitr Refinery. The ratio is fixed, so stockpile Soft Tissue from Seekers and Infested Mines before you start a big crafting session.
What do I need to build the Eitr Refinery?
The Eitr Refinery costs 20 Black Marble, 5 Yggdrasil Wood, and 5 Dvergr Lanterns. You also need a Sap Extractor to make the Sap, and that costs 10 Black Marble, 5 Yggdrasil Wood, and 5 Dvergr Lanterns. A Galdr Table costs another 10 Black Marble, 5 Yggdrasil Wood, and 5 Dvergr Lanterns.
What is Refined Eitr used for?
Refined Eitr is used at the Galdr Table to craft magic weapons and armor. This includes the Staff of Embers, Frost Staff, Staff of Protection, Dead Raiser, and Eitr-weave armor set. It is the core resource for Valheim’s magic build, so expect to refine a lot of it.
