So you're hunting black metal scrap in Valheim and coming up empty. Trust me, I've been there. You've done the Mountains, you've beaten the Swamp, and now this one material feels like it's hiding from you.

Here's the deal: it lives in the Plains biome and the goblin little guys called Fulings carry it. Not the Black Forest. Not the Swamp. Definitely not the Mountains. Pack your best gear, sail west until the grass turns yellow, and start whacking Fulings. That's literally it.

Dead Fulings are your ticket. Every type drops it — regular Fulings, Fuling Shamans, even the big Fuling Berserkers. Run through their camps and villages scattered around the Plains and the scrap piles up fast.

Stop swinging your pickaxe at rocks. This one isn't mined. You're gonna need to fight for it.

Where to Find Black Metal Scrap Fast: Fuling Camps

Wild Fulings wandering the open Plains will drop scrap too, sure, but roaming around forever is a slow grind. You want a Fuling camp. These tiny villages are hard to miss once you know what you're looking for — wooden barricades, little huts, torches burning, and more often than not a Berserker stomping around inside.

My trick before a farming run: I pull out the map and drop a pin on every camp I can spot from a distance. One packed camp cleared clean can dump a surprising amount of scrap in your pack, which saves you hours of chasing stragglers across empty grass.

Step-by-Step: How to Farm Black Metal Scrap Safely

Look, the Plains do not care about your feelings. Deathsquitos and Fulings will end an underprepared Viking in about ten seconds flat. Skip this prep and you'll be staring at the respawn screen more than you'll be holding scrap.

Step 1: Unlock the Blast Furnace First

Scrap is just heavy junk until you smelt it into Black Metal bars, and that needs a Blast Furnace. Your regular Smelter won't touch it. The Blast Furnace itself needs an Artisan Table, which needs Dragon Tears from the Mountain boss, Moder.

So yeah, beat Moder first. Drop the Artisan Table somewhere safe, build the Blast Furnace, and only then should you start hoarding. You don't have to smelt before you kill Fulings — but if your chests are full of raw scrap and you still haven't touched Moder, you're doing yourself no favors.

New Player Warning: You absolutely can pick up scrap before the Blast Furnace exists. You just can't use any of it. Don't let a mountain of unusable scrap rot in your storage while Moder is still out there.

Step 2: Scout the Plains from the Coast

Grab your Longship and trace the coastline. You'll know the Plains when you see them — open yellow grass stretching to the horizon with those absurdly huge rock pillars. Bring a Spyglass so you can check the shoreline without beaching in the middle of trouble.

What you're looking for are little village shapes. Those are Fuling camps. Pin them on your map, and keep sailing past — do not aggro a camp until you're actually ready to clear it.

Step 3: Land Away from the Camp

I learned this one the hard way. Don't beach your Longship right at the camp entrance. Deathsquitos cruise the coast, and Fulings love to toss spears from range. Pick a quiet empty beach nearby and walk the rest of the way.

If you're planning to chain several camps, drop a portal on the safe side of the Plains — not inside a Fuling village, obviously. Die out here and you'll be glad that portal exists, because getting back to your loot naked is a whole different kind of awful.

Step 4: Clear the Outside Enemies First

Pick off the Fulings that have wandered away from the main group before you push in. Bow work here. Deathsquitos are the real silent killers, and you want them dead before they dive-bomb you mid-fight.

Watch your stamina bar like it owes you money. Run out in the Plains and you're basically already dead — the next hit that lands is the one you can't dodge.

New Player Warning: Do not sprint head-first into a Fuling village with half a stamina bar left. The Plains will punish that. Every time.

Step 5: Fight the Camp in the Right Order

You cannot tank the whole camp at once. If a Fuling Shaman is hanging back, kill them first — their support spells turn every other enemy into a nightmare. Then go after Fuling Berserkers. They're slow, but their hits are brutal, so keep your stamina free for dodging instead of swinging.

With the shaman and berserker gone, the regular Fulings are just cleanup. Pull them in small groups; don't run into the middle and get surrounded. If it all goes sideways, pop your Bonemass power and the damage you take drops hard.

Step 6: Loot the Scrap and Move to the Next Camp

Once the camp is quiet, walk every corpse and scoop up the black metal scrap. If your pack is filling up, haul it back to the boat or shove it through your portal before you start the next fight. Nothing stings worse than losing a full load to one bad Deathsquito.

Sail over to the next pin on your map and repeat. This loop is what makes farming efficient — you're spending almost all your time actually fighting Fulings, and barely any time wandering around wondering where the next one is.

New Player Warning: Don't be greedy. Bank that scrap after every camp. A long death-run back into the Plains is the easiest way to throw away your whole haul.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Farming Black Metal Scrap

Even once you know where the scrap is, dumb stuff still happens. Watch out for these and you'll cut down on the respawn screens.

  1. You show up to the Plains with no Blast Furnace waiting at home. Sure, you can collect it. It's just useless.
  2. Trying to clear camps after dark. Nighttime Plains are nastier and more things spawn. Wait for daylight.
  3. Treating Deathsquitos like a nuisance. They hit like a truck. Pick them off at range before they get to you — one on a low-health run and it's over.
  4. Trading hits with a Fuling Berserker. Huge health pool, painful little combo. Stay mobile, don't stand in front of them.
  5. Carrying your whole haul around instead of portaling it home. Black metal scrap is heavy. Portal it out after each clear and keep moving.

Black Metal Scrap FAQ

Where to find black metal scrap in Valheim?

Head to the Plains biome and start killing Fulings. Camps are your best bet because they cluster a bunch of Fulings in one spot. Every dead Fuling drops scrap, so clearing a single full camp can stack you up fast.

Can you farm black metal scrap more than once from the same area?

Sometimes. Plains mobs respawn over time, especially if you loiter around or come back after a few in-game days. But don't count on a cleared camp refilling on demand. Mark a handful of camps and rotate between them instead of camping one spot.

What do you do with black metal scrap?

Smelt it in a Blast Furnace into Black Metal bars. Those bars feed late-game recipes — weapons, tools, all that black metal gear. You need the Artisan Table and the Blast Furnace set up first, so get that sorted before you start hoarding.

At the end of the day, if you're still stressing over where black metal scrap comes from: stop overthinking it. Sail to the Plains, find a camp, fight. Once you've done one clear, the mystery pretty much evaporates.
