Learn exactly where to find turnip seeds in Valheim so you can plant, harvest, and unlock better food recipes.
You're here because you're trying to figure out where to find turnip seeds in Valheim. I've been in your boots. Turnips are the second crop you'll really want after carrots, and they unlock some of the better early-to-mid game food out there.
Here's the catch nobody tells you: carrots you just scoop off the Meadows floor, but turnip seeds are different. They live in one specific biome, and I swear half of new players stumble through an entire playtime without ever finding them.
Short version — turnip seeds come from wild turnip plants hanging out in the Swamp biome. Pluck the plant, walk away with seeds, plant them back at your base. From there turnips feed into Turnip Stew and eventually Magecap and other food combos that keep your heart bar alive in the Mountains and Plains.
My first run I burned hours in the Black Forest hunting for turnip seeds because I just assumed they'd spawn there the way carrots spawn in the Meadows. They don't. I learned nothing. Then someone mentioned the Swamp and it clicked into place immediately.
I'll walk you through exactly where to find turnip seeds, how to farm them without dying, and the mistakes that catch almost everybody.
One source only: wild turnip plants in the Swamp biome.
Spotting them is the hard part. Picture a small green leafy bush with a whitish turnip top poking out of the mud. Sounds obvious, right? The Swamp is dark, wet, and crawling with stuff that wants you dead, and those little plants blend right into the gloom. I've walked past them three times before noticing.
Things worth knowing about wild turnips:
Pro tip: Bring a portal. The Swamp is miles from your base, and getting picked off by a leech or wraith on the run home with a pocketful of seeds is its own special circle of hell.
The Swamp will ruin you if you're sloppy. This is how I hunt turnip seeds and actually survive:
Grab a few seeds and head home. One seed is enough to start, but I'd bag 5–10 to get the farm rolling faster.
Quick warning for new players: Bronze-tier gear is the bare minimum. Show up naked and the draugr and leeches will eat you before you ever see a turnip.
Seeds in pocket? Good. Let's turn this into an actual farm.
Nothing plants itself. You need a Cultivator, and you build one at a level 1 Forge with:
No bronze yet? You're off to the Black Forest to mine copper and tin and smelt them together. Non-negotiable — no Cultivator, no crops.
Equip the Cultivator and use it on the ground. Two options pop up:
Pick a flat patch near your base and cultivate it. Turnips need elbow room, so leave gaps between plots.
With the Cultivator out, right-click (or whatever your plant key is) to flip into Plant mode. Pick turnip seeds from your bag and set them down on the cultivated soil.
Roughly a meter between plants. Cramming them together just wastes seeds.
Turnips take about 2 in-game days to mature — roughly 40–50 real minutes depending on your settings. While you wait:
Another heads-up: Skip the fence and a random boar will turn your farm into an all-you-can-eat salad bar. Fence first, plant second.
Ready turnips show fuller leafy tops with the actual turnip peeking out. Interact to harvest and you walk away with:
Stash some seeds for replanting. That's the whole loop — manage your seed stock and you'll never have to go back to the Swamp for turnips again.
This isn't just some side crop. Turnips feed into real recipes:
Turnip Stew is what carries you through the Mountains and into the early Plains. Skip it and you're stuck on cooked meat and carrot soup, which does not hold up when a wolf is breathing down your neck.
Traps I keep seeing people walk into:
Can you find turnip seeds outside the Swamp? No. Wild turnip plants only spawn in the Swamp biome. You can't buy them and they don't drop from enemies.
How many seeds does one turnip plant give? Wild plants give 1 when you pick them. Farmed turnips usually give 1–3 seeds per harvest. It wobbles a little.
Do turnips need light or water to grow? Nope. Cultivated soil and time is all they want. No watering, no lighting, no fuss.
What's the fastest way to get turnip seeds? Sail the Swamp coast and scan the waterline for those small leafy plants. Grab 5–10, portal home, and start farming right away.
