Eitr is the resource behind every magic build in Valheim. Not the blue bar on your HUD — that's your Eitr pool, which comes from food and gear — but Refined Eitr, the crafting material that the Mistlands tier is built on. It's what you spend on the four staves (Staff of Embers, Staff of Frost, Staff of Protection, and Dead Raiser), the Eitr-weave Hood, Robe and Trousers, the Feather Cape, and the Galdr Table you need to craft most of that gear in the first place.
The thing that confuses people is that Refined Eitr is not a drop. No Seeker, Gjall, or Dvergr mage will ever hand it over, and it isn't sitting in a chest at the end of an Infested Mine. It's manufactured, and the production chain looks like this:
Yggdrasil roots → Sap Extractor → Sap → Eitr Refinery → Refined Eitr
Both machines are built from the Black Forge, which means the Eitr chain doesn't actually start until you've got Black Cores out of Infested Mines. And since both the roots and the mines live in the Mistlands, you'll want Yagluth dead and a Wisplight on your belt first — otherwise you're doing all of this in fog thick enough to walk straight into a Gjall.
This build guide walks the whole chain in order, then covers the tips that save the most time and the mistakes that cost the most.
1. Kill Yagluth and craft a Wisplight. Yagluth, the fifth boss, is the giant skeletal hand in the Plains. His trophy is the Torn Spirit, which is the key ingredient for the Wisplight — the little wisp that orbits you and clears a bubble of mist around your character. Without it, Mistlands navigation is genuinely miserable: the fog hides terrain, enemies, and the very roots you're hunting. Do this first. It is not optional.
2. Raid Infested Mines for Black Cores. Infested Mines are the dungeon entrances scattered through the Mistlands — stone doorways leading down into Seeker tunnels. Inside you'll fight Seekers, Seekersoldiers, and swarms of Ticks, and there's frequently a Gjall floating near the entrance. Black Cores come out of these mines, and they gate everything: the Black Forge, the Galdr Table, and the staves themselves. Bring a stack's worth home.
3. Harvest Yggdrasil Wood. The tall, glowing shoots sprouting around the Mistlands give Yggdrasil Wood when chopped. Bring a Black Metal Axe and clear every shoot you pass. Yggdrasil Wood is used in nearly every Mistlands recipe, including both machines below — so the demand is roughly double what you'd expect.
4. Build the Black Forge. Once you have Black Cores, Black Metal, and Yggdrasil Wood, build the Black Forge at your main base. This unlocks the two stations that matter for Eitr production.
5. Build the Sap Extractor. Craft the Sap Extractor at the Black Forge (it costs Yggdrasil Wood, Black Metal, and Dvergr Lanterns you salvage from Dvergr outposts). Now the important part: it only attaches to the huge Yggdrasil roots that break through the Mistlands floor. It will not place on regular ground or on the thin shoots you chopped for wood. Find a root, snap the extractor onto it, and it begins passively accumulating Sap on its own — no fuel, no input, just time.
6. Build the Eitr Refinery and convert. Also crafted at the Black Forge. Place it somewhere convenient — near your Black Forge is ideal — and load Sap into it. The refinery consumes Sap and outputs Refined Eitr. Collect from the output and repeat.
7. Build the Galdr Table. This is the magic crafting station, and it consumes Refined Eitr along with Yggdrasil Wood and Black Cores. Once it's standing, you can finally spend your Eitr on staves and Eitr-weave armor.
8. Keep the loop running. The extractors fill on their own, so Eitr production is a background task. Every few in-game days, portal out to your roots, empty the extractors, and run the Sap through the refinery.
Can I skip Yagluth and still get Eitr? Not realistically. Nothing stops you from sailing into the Mistlands early, but without the Wisplight you're effectively blind, and without Black Cores from Infested Mines you can't build the Black Forge, which means you can't build the Sap Extractor or the Eitr Refinery at all. The chain has no shortcut.
Does Refined Eitr drop from Gjall, Seekers, or Dvergr mages? No. Every source of Refined Eitr is a machine: the Eitr Refinery converting Sap, which the Sap Extractor pulled from Yggdrasil roots. Enemies in the Mistlands drop Carapace, Black Cores, and trophies — never Eitr.
How much Refined Eitr should I stockpile? Think in the hundreds if you want a real mage build. The Galdr Table, two or three staves, and the Eitr-weave set together consume well over a hundred units, and the Feather Cape wants its share too. Build three or four Sap Extractors, keep the refinery fed, and you'll never be stuck waiting.
