Overview
Mohg, Lord of Blood, is one of the most spectacular and punishing bosses in Elden Ring. Found at the end of the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum, he gatekeeps access to the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC and the Remembrance of the Blood Lord. His phase transition — the infamous "Nihil" ritual — is a nearly guaranteed one-shot for most players under 60 Vigor, and his relentless aggression in Phase 2 makes him a nightmare for melee builds.
But here's the good news: Mohg is also one of the easiest bosses in the game to completely trivialize. Thanks to a specific Physick tear, a shackle item, and the right positioning, you can turn this blood-soaked demigod into a punching bag. The "cheese" strategy I'm about to describe doesn't rely on glitches or exploits — just smart use of the tools FromSoftware gave us.
This guide covers the full cheese route: the Purifying Crystal Tear, Mohg's Shackle, and a step-by-step fight plan that works for almost any build. Whether you're a strength tank, a mage, or a bleed enthusiast, this method will get you past Mohg in just a few attempts.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough
Step 1: Get the Purifying Crystal Tear
This item is the cornerstone of the cheese. It completely negates the damage from Mohg's Nihil attack during his phase transition. Without it, you'll need to chug three flasks mid-ritual — and even then, the timing is brutal.
Location: The Purifying Crystal Tear is found in the Consecrated Snowfield, inside the Second Church of Marika. From the Ordina, Liturgical Town grace, head northwest across the frozen river. The church is guarded by an invisible Black Knife Assassin — either kill it or sprint past it. The tear sits on the altar inside.
Once you have it, mix it into your Flask of Wondrous Physick at any Site of Grace. The tear lasts for three minutes, which is more than enough for this fight.
Step 2: Purchase Mohg's Shackle (Optional but Recommended)
Mohg's Shackle is a reusable item that staggers Mohg twice during Phase 1. It's sold by the Nomadic Merchant in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds beneath Leyndell. From the Underground Roadside grace, follow the pipes until you find him. The shackle costs 20,000 runes.
Important: The Shackle only works in Phase 1. In Phase 2, Mohg is immune — don't waste your time trying to use it after he counts down "Nihil."
Step 3: Prepare Your Build and Summons
The cheese works with any build, but here's the optimal setup:
- Weapon: Any weapon with high burst damage. Bleed weapons like Rivers of Blood or a Bloodflame Blade-buffed Uchigatana work wonders. If you're a mage, Comet Azur with the Cerulean Hidden Tear is another cheese in itself.
- Summon: Mimic Tear is the best choice. Give it the same Physick tear setup. Alternatively, Black Knife Tiche can deal percentage-based damage with her Destined Death attacks.
- Talismans: Lord of Blood's Exultation (from Mohgwyn Palace), Shard of Alexander, Ritual Sword Talisman, and Green Turtle Talisman.
- Flask: Purifying Crystal Tear + Opaline Bubbletear (for safety) or Strength-Knot Crystal Tear for damage.
Step 4: The Fight Itself
Phase 1 (100%–50% HP):
- Enter the arena and immediately summon your Mimic Tear. Let it draw aggro.
- Attack Mohg from behind or the side. He has low poise in Phase 1, so most weapons will stagger him.
- When you see him raise his trident and begin the ritual (he'll say "It's time to feast"), that's your queue. He'll drain the three blood pools and begin counting down from three.
- Use Mohg's Shackle immediately if you have it. This staggers him out of the ritual, buying you free hits. If you don't have the Shackle, just keep attacking — the ritual is interruptible in Phase 1.
- Continue DPS until he hits 50% HP. He'll transition to Phase 2 by flying into the air.
Phase 2 (50%–0% HP):
- As Mohg flies up, he'll begin the Nihil ritual. This is where the Purifying Crystal Tear saves your life. The tear automatically activates when you enter the arena — you don't need to drink anything. The Nihil will deal zero damage.
- After Nihil, Mohg gains wings and bloodflame attacks. His aggression skyrockets, but he's also easier to stagger because he's airborne more often.
- Stay aggressive. With your Mimic Tear still alive, you can trade hits and heal through his bleed buildup.
- Finish him with a critical hit or a burst of damage. If you're struggling, use Black Knife Tiche's Destined Death to chip away at his HP.
Tips and Strategies
- The Purifying Crystal Tear is non-negotiable. Without it, you need to chug three flasks during the Nihil countdown. The timing is tight, and if you're mid-animation, you're dead. Just get the tear.
- Mohg's Shackle works twice in Phase 1. Use it once at the start to get free hits, and again if he tries the ritual. It's a 20,000-rune investment that pays for itself.
- Bleed is your friend — and your enemy. Mohg is weak to bleed, but he also inflicts it on you. Wear the Lord of Blood's Exultation talisman to boost your damage when bleed procs nearby.
- Stay under him in Phase 2. Mohg's most dangerous attacks are his wide bloodflame sweeps. Hugging his legs forces him to use less accurate attacks.
- Don't get greedy with healing. Mohg punishes flask chugs with his trident thrust. Heal only after he finishes a combo or when your Mimic Tear has aggro.
- If you're a mage, Comet Azur cheese still works. Pop your Physick with the Cerulean Hidden Tear and Purifying Crystal Tear, summon your Mimic Tear, and blast Mohg during his Phase 1 ritual. You can kill him before Phase 2 even starts.
Common Mistakes
- Forgetting the Purifying Crystal Tear. This is the #1 reason players die to Mohg. Without it, Nihil deals around 90% of your max HP. Even with 60 Vigor, you'll need to flask through it.
- Using Mohg's Shackle in Phase 2. It doesn't work. Save it for Phase 1 and use it early.
- Trying to outrange Mohg. He has incredible reach with his trident and bloodflame attacks. Ranged builds need to stay mobile and use cover when possible.
- Ignoring the Mimic Tear. Your summon is your best damage dealer and aggro magnet. If it dies, revive it with a Sacrificial Twig or just re-summon at the grace.
- Panicking during Nihil. With the Purifying Crystal Tear, you can literally stand still and emote. Don't run around — just wait for the countdown to finish and resume attacking.
FAQ
Q: Can I use this strategy on Mohg, the Omen in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds? A: No. Mohg, the Omen is a separate boss fought earlier in the game. He doesn't have the Nihil ritual, and Mohg's Shackle works differently against him. This guide is specifically for Mohg, Lord of Blood in Mohgwyn Palace.
Q: What if I missed the Purifying Crystal Tear and can't go back? A: You can always return to the Consecrated Snowfield as long as you've reached it. If you haven't unlocked the area yet, you'll need to progress through the Mountaintops of the Giants and solve the Ordina puzzle. There's no point of no return for this item.
Q: Does the cheese still work on New Game+? A: Yes, but Mohg hits harder and has more HP. The Purifying Crystal Tear still negates Nihil entirely, and Mohg's Shackle still staggers him in Phase 1. You'll just need more damage output. Consider bringing Black Knife Tiche for percentage-based damage if your build is struggling.
