Overview

Malenia, Blade of Miquella, is one of Elden Ring’s hardest optional bosses. You’ll find her at the bottom of Miquella’s Haligtree, in Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree. The closest grace is Haligtree Roots, just before the fog gate. She is a two-phase demigod: Phase 1 is a duel against her prosthetic-arm swordsmanship; Phase 2 turns her into the Goddess of Rot, adding Scarlet Rot blooms, clone attacks, and far more aggression. On New Game, she has roughly 36,946 total HP across both phases, and she heals whenever her attacks connect—even if you block. That single mechanic changes everything. You cannot out-tank her with a greatshield and chip her down; you need to avoid damage, break her stance, and exploit her weaknesses.

Her biggest weaknesses are Hemorrhage and Frostbite. Bleed procs chunk her health and stagger her. Frostbite does percentage damage and makes her take more damage. Scarlet Rot is not a reliable weakness—she is the Goddess of Rot, after all. She can also be parried, stance-broken, and staggered by well-timed heavy attacks, jump attacks, and Ashes of War. The fight is optional, but defeating her rewards Malenia’s Great Rune and the Remembrance of the Rot Goddess, which can be exchanged for Hand of Malenia or Scarlet Aeonia. Her arena is a large circular pool of shallow water at the base of the Haligtree, which means no environmental cover. You fight her alone unless you summon.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

  1. Reach the Haligtree. You need both halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion. The right half comes from Albus in the Village of the Albinaurics in Liurnia. The left half is dropped by Commander Niall at Castle Sol in the Mountaintops of the Giants. Take both to the Grand Lift of Rold and switch the medallion to the secret option to reach the Consecrated Snowfield.

  2. Solve Ordina, Liturgical Town. In the Consecrated Snowfield, find Ordina, Liturgical Town. Light the four statues in the Evergaol to open the portal to Miquella’s Haligtree. Bring a Sentry’s Torch or use area attacks because invisible Black Knife Assassins patrol the town.

  3. Descend Miquella’s Haligtree. Fight through the branches and Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree. Defeat Loretta, Knight of the Haligtree, then continue down to the Haligtree Roots site of grace. This is the last grace before Malenia.

  4. Prepare before the fog. Rest at Haligtree Roots. If you completed Millicent’s questline and sided with her at the Haligtree, her summon sign can appear near the fog. Otherwise, upgrade Mimic Tear Ashes or Black Knife Tiche to +10. Set your Wondrous Physick to Opaline Hardtear, Stonebarb Cracked Tear, and Greenburst Crystal Tear. Stock Preserving Boluses and equip Flame, Cleanse Me if you have the faith.

  5. Phase 1. Stay mid-range, bait her combos, and punish after her sword swings. She is vulnerable to bleed and frostbite, so dual bleed weapons, Rivers of Blood, Mohgwyn’s Sacred Spear, or Cold Uchigatana/Nagakiba work well. When she jumps into the air, she is about to use Waterfowl Dance. Sprint away from the first flurry, dodge into the second, then dodge away from the third. If you have a Freezing Pot, throw it as she jumps to interrupt her.

  6. Phase 2. She opens with Scarlet Aeonia. Run away from the bloom, then punish her while she recovers. She gains rot explosions, a clone attack, and longer combos. Keep applying bleed and frostbite, avoid greedy attacks, and heal only after her combos end. Use Mimic Tear or Tiche to split aggro, but remember she heals when she hits them too.

  7. Finish her. When she dies, you get Malenia’s Great Rune and Remembrance of the Rot Goddess. Trade the remembrance at Finger Reader Enia in Roundtable Hold for Hand of Malenia or Scarlet Aeonia.

FAQ

Q: What is Malenia weakest to?
A: Hemorrhage and Frostbite. Bleed weapons like Rivers of Blood, Mohgwyn’s Sacred Spear, and dual Blood Uchigatanas are extremely effective. Cold-infused weapons apply Frostbite, which deals percentage damage and increases her damage taken. She can also be parried and stance-broken.

Q: Can I summon help for Malenia?
A: Yes. You can summon Mimic Tear Ashes or Black Knife Tiche after upgrading them to +10. If you completed Millicent’s questline and sided with her, her summon sign can appear near the fog. Online co-op is also available, though she heals when she hits summons or phantoms.

Q: How do I dodge Waterfowl Dance?
A: When she jumps up, sprint away from the first flurry. Dodge into her for the second flurry, then dodge away or sideways for the third. If you are too close, use Bloodhound Step or throw a Freezing Pot as she jumps to interrupt the attack. Do not panic roll backward into the first flurry. If you are mid-roll when she starts, unlock and run; a single mistimed roll can cost the run.
