Read the guide →The Black Knife Assassin is one of Elden Ring's most notorious early-game walls.
The Black Knife Assassin is one of Elden Ring's most notorious early-game walls. This cloaked nightmare waits at the end of Deathtouched Catacombs in Limgrave, and she's carrying the Assassin's Cerulean Dagger—a talisman that restores FP on critical hits. The problem? She's brutally fast, deals massive damage, and her attacks inflict the Black Knife debuff, which reduces your maximum HP and stacks with every hit. For a low-level or under-geared player, this fight can feel impossible.
The good news is that the Black Knife Assassin has a glaring weakness: her AI is terrible at dealing with the doorway leading into her boss arena. She cannot pass through it. She'll try, she'll fail, and she'll stand there swiping at empty air while you poke her to death from safety. This cheese strategy works at any level, requires no specific build, and turns one of Limgrave's hardest fights into a trivial chore. It's the single best way to grab the Assassin's Cerulean Dagger early, giving you a fantastic tool for FP-hungry builds.
You'll find this particular Black Knife Assassin in Deathtouched Catacombs, located in the northern part of Limgrave, just east of the Saintsbridge Site of Grace. The catacombs are filled with skeletons, so bring a weapon with Sacred Blade or any source of holy damage to keep them down permanently. Once you reach the boss door, the cheese begins.
Prepare your loadout. You need three things: a decent shield (the Brass Shield from Godrick Soldiers is perfect), a weapon that can poke or stagger (spears, thrusting swords, or any weapon with a jumping attack), and patience. Optional but recommended: the Assassin's Cerulean Dagger isn't required for this, but having some ranged options like Glintstone Pebble or a bow can speed things up. Stock up on Crimson Flask charges at the Stranded Graveyard or Church of Elleh.
Reach the boss door. From the Deathtouched Catacombs Site of Grace, follow the dungeon down. You'll pass skeletons and a few trapped corridors. Ignore the side rooms with imp statues and just push toward the boss fog. The boss door is at the bottom of a long staircase. Do not enter the arena yet.
Activate the fight, then retreat. Enter the boss fog. The Black Knife Assassin spawns at the far end of the room, cloaked in invisibility. She'll immediately rush you. Run straight back through the fog door. Yes, you can run back through it. The arena boundary doesn't lock you in until you're fully inside, and even then, the doorway itself is a physical gap she cannot cross.
Position yourself on the stairs. Once you're outside the fog, stand at the top of the stairs facing the doorway. The assassin will approach but stop at the threshold. She'll swipe her dagger, do her spinning attacks, and occasionally leap—but she cannot pass through. Her hitbox will clip the invisible wall, leaving her open.
Poke her down. With your shield up, watch for her attack patterns. She has a quick double-slash, a delayed triple-slash, and a grab. All of them will hit your shield or miss entirely if you're standing just outside the door. Punish her after each combo with one or two light attacks. Do not get greedy. Her poise is low, so you can stagger her with jumping attacks or heavy thrusts, but she recovers fast.
Watch for the grab. Her grab attack—where she lunges forward and impales you—has deceptive range. Even at the doorway, she can sometimes clip you if you're standing directly in the center. Stand slightly to the side of the doorway. If she grabs you, it's a massive chunk of HP and a stack of the Black Knife debuff. You can roll backward to avoid it, but staying off-center is more reliable.
Finish her and claim your prize. Once her health hits zero, she'll collapse. You'll receive the Assassin's Cerulean Dagger and 4,000 runes. The dagger restores 15 FP on critical hits, making it excellent for builds that rely on skills like Unsheathe, Lion's Claw, or Glintstone Pebble. Congratulations—you've beaten one of Limgrave's toughest bosses without breaking a sweat.
Weapon choice matters. The best weapon for this cheese is any spear or thrusting sword. The Partisan, Pike, or Rapier let you attack from behind your shield without lowering it. If you're using a greatsword or colossal weapon, jumping attacks work well, but you'll need to time them between her combos. Avoid slow charged attacks—she'll punish you.
Use a 100% physical block shield. The Brass Shield (dropped by Godrick Soldiers) or the Beast Crest Heater Shield (from the merchant at the Church of Elleh for 1,200 runes) are ideal. Her attacks are all physical except for the Black Knife projectile wave, which has a holy component. That wave can chip through your shield, so roll through it or step behind the doorway wall when she raises her dagger overhead.
Buffs help, but don't rely on them. Flame, Grant Me Strength or Golden Vow will speed up the kill. But if you're at a low level, focus on survivability. The Green Turtle Talisman for stamina regeneration is more useful here than damage talismans.
Bring a summon if you're struggling. The Lone Wolf Ashes or Skeletal Militiamen can distract her, but they'll die quickly. The real benefit is that she'll split her attention, giving you free hits. Just don't summon them inside the arena—summon them before you trigger the boss, then run to the doorway.
You can also cheese her with ranged attacks. Rock Sling from the Meteorite Staff absolutely demolishes her. Stand at the doorway and spam it. She has no answer to ranged spam. Even a basic Longbow with Bone Arrows works if you have the patience.
This cheese works on other Black Knife Assassins too. The one in Black Knife Catacombs (guarding the Black Knifeprint) and the one in Sainted Hero's Grave can be cheesed with similar doorway tactics. The arena layout is different, but the principle is the same—find a threshold she can't cross.
Entering the arena fully. The biggest mistake is walking all the way in. Once you're past the fog, the doorway behind you becomes a death trap. You'll get cornered and shredded. Trigger the fight, then immediately back out. Don't try to trade hits inside the room.
Getting greedy with attacks. She has a fast recovery and will punish you if you swing three times instead of two. Stick to one or two hits, then reset. The fight is a marathon, not a sprint.
Ignoring the Black Knife debuff. Every hit she lands reduces your max HP by a percentage. It stacks. If you take three hits, you're fighting with half health. Use Preserving Boluses if you have them, or just don't get hit. The debuff wears off after about 30 seconds, but that's an eternity in this fight.
Using a shield with low guard boost. If your shield has less than 60 guard boost, her combos will break your guard and leave you stunned. The Brass Shield has 68 guard boost at +3, which is plenty. Upgrade it if you can.
Standing directly in the doorway. She can hit you through the doorway if you're centered. Stand to the left or right of the opening. Her attacks will whiff entirely, and you can punish her recovery.
Q: Where exactly is the Black Knife Assassin in Deathtouched Catacombs? A: From the Deathtouched Catacombs Site of Grace, head down the main corridor. You'll pass a room with a spike trap and several skeletons. Keep going until you reach a long staircase. At the bottom is the boss fog. The Site of Grace is in Limgrave, northeast of the Saintsbridge. If you've met D, Hunter of the Dead at the Roundtable Hold, he mentions this catacomb.
Q: Does this cheese still work after patch 1.10? A: Yes. FromSoftware has never patched out the doorway exploit for this boss. The Black Knife Assassin's AI still fails to path through the threshold. As of the latest patch, the strategy remains 100% effective.
Q: What do I get for beating her, and is it worth it? A: You get the Assassin's Cerulean Dagger and 4,000 runes. The dagger restores 15 FP on critical hits, which is fantastic for any build that uses skills or spells heavily. It's especially good for early-game spellblades who need FP sustain. Absolutely worth the five minutes it takes to cheese her.
