The most direct way to reach the Underdark through the Blighted Village is hiding in plain sight. In the middle of that ruined, goblin-infested village sits an old stone well that looks like background decoration. It’s not.

Climb down that well and you’ll land in the Whispering Depths, a cave system swarming with phase spiders. Push through the deepest part of that cave, and you can drop straight into the Underdark. That’s the whole route: well, spiders, then a long drop down.

Sounds simple, right? But the Phase Spider Matriarch makes this one of the sneakiest “early access to the Underdark” routes in the game. Let’s walk through it step by step so you don’t end up as spider food.

Route to the Underdark through the Blighted Village

How to Reach the Underdark Through the Blighted Village: Step-by-Step Route

Here’s the quick version:

  1. Go to the Blighted Village.
  2. Find the well in the main square.
  3. Climb down into the Whispering Depths.
  4. Clear out the phase spiders and spiderling nests.
  5. Deal with the Phase Spider Matriarch.
  6. Take the back exit in her lair down into the Underdark.

Once you do this, you’ll pop out near the Underdark – Selûnite Outpost waypoint. That puts you in a great spot to explore the rest of the Underdark without dealing with the Goblin Camp’s Defiled Temple puzzle.

Before You Drop Down the Well: Preparation Tips

I don’t want you to climb down that well and immediately get wrecked. Here’s what you should have ready first:

New player warning: save your game before you climb down. You don’t want to lose an hour of progress because a phase spider decided to teleport on top of you.

The first time I dropped into that well, I thought I was just checking a side room. Then a giant spider momma appeared out of nowhere. Don’t repeat my mistake.

Step 1: Get to the Blighted Village and Find the Well

If you’ve reached the Emerald Grove, you’re already close. The Blighted Village sits northeast of the Grove. Follow the road past the broken archway until you see ruined houses and a big wooden windmill. That’s the village.

You’ll probably run into goblins and a worg patrolling the streets. You can fight them, sneak around, or just ignore them if you’re only here for the Underdark route. The well is in the center of the village, near the main ruined square. It’s not hard to miss.

Walk up to the stone well and click on it. You should see a prompt to climb down or descend into the well. If you want to be extra careful, cast Feather Fall on your party first. But the standard “climb down” option works fine.

Step 2: Enter the Whispering Depths

Once you climb down, you’ll be in the Whispering Depths. This cave is basically a spider’s apartment complex. It has multiple levels, web bridges, and lots of places where spiders can ambush you.

Here’s the important thing: don’t sprint forward. Instead:

New player warning: if you see an egg sac, don’t stand next to it and poke it with a sword. Shoot it from far away, or you’ll have a swarm on your hands.

Navigation is a little confusing here because there are webs everywhere. The main goal is to work your way deeper into the cave until you reach the matriarch’s arena. You’ll know you’re close when you see lots of webbing and larger egg sacs.

Step 3: Survive the Phase Spider Matriarch Fight

The Phase Spider Matriarch is the boss of the Whispering Depths. She’s much larger than the other phase spiders, and she hits hard. She also has a nasty habit of laying eggs mid-fight, which means new spiderlings will keep appearing if you don’t deal with the egg sacs.

Here are a few ways to handle her:

New player warning: when you burn the web under the matriarch, make sure none of your own party is standing on that web. Fire doesn’t care who it drops.

Once the matriarch is down, clear out any remaining spiderlings and egg sacs. Then it’s time to find the Underdark exit.

Step 4: Find the Hidden Path to the Underdark

After the matriarch fight, look around the back of her lair. There’s a cave passage and a series of rocky ledges that lead down. This is the path to the Underdark.

Follow the passage down. You’ll climb down a few ledges, and the cave will open up into a much larger area. The transition from Whispering Depths to the Underdark is pretty obvious: the stone colors change, and the atmosphere gets even more purple and eerie.

Eventually, you’ll step out into the actual Underdark and discover the Underdark – Selûnite Outpost waypoint. From there, you can head toward the Arcane Tower, the Myconid Colony, or continue exploring at your own pace.

Common Mistakes When You Try to Reach the Underdark Through the Blighted Village

Let’s be real: this route is punishing if you mess it up. Here are the biggest mistakes I see players make:

1. Dropping down without a heal or a plan.
Phase spiders will shred you if you aren’t ready. Make sure your party is healed, your spells are prepared, and you have a few potions in your inventory.

2. Waking up every egg sac at once.
Egg sacs are scattered all over the Whispering Depths. If you run through the area like a bull in a china shop, you’ll hatch twenty spiderlings at once. Destroy egg sacs from a distance, one at a time.

3. Standing on a web when you light it on fire.
Yes, you can burn webs to drop spiders. But the same thing happens to you if you’re standing on that web. Make sure you’re on solid rock before you start setting webs on fire.

4. Giving up after the matriarch knocks one member down.
You can revive fallen allies with scrolls or Shadowheart’s healing magic. Don’t panic if one character goes down. Pull back, heal up, and re-engage.

5. Walking past the Underdark exit.
After the matriarch fight, the exit isn’t always obvious. Take a few seconds to look around her arena. The rocky ledges in the back might not look like a path, but that’s where you need to go.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to fight the Phase Spider Matriarch to reach the Underdark through the Blighted Village?

You have to get past her, but you don’t have to fight her normally. You can sneak past her using invisibility, or you can destroy the web she’s standing on so she takes massive fall damage. The easiest way is to break the web under her with fire, then loot her body from below.

What level should I be to reach the Underdark through the Blighted Village?

Level 4 is the lowest I’d recommend. Level 5 makes the matriarch fight much more manageable. If you’re still level 3, go explore a few other areas first and come back with better gear and more healing.

Where does the well route drop you in the Underdark?

The Whispering Depths exit takes you to the Underdark – Selûnite Outpost waypoint area. From there, you can explore the Arcane Tower, the Myconid Colony, or push deeper into the Underdark toward Grymforge.

Is the well route better than the Goblin Camp route?

It depends on your playstyle. The well route is faster if you don’t want to deal with the Goblin Camp’s Defiled Temple puzzle. But it’s definitely more dangerous because of the spiders. If you’re already going to fight the goblins anyway, you might choose that route instead. If you want a direct path and don’t mind spiders, the well is the way to go.

Now grab your party, stock up on healing potions, and go climb down that well. The Underdark is waiting — just don’t forget your fire spells for the spider webs.
