So you want to know where to find silver ore in Valheim. Fair question. Silver lives in the Mountain biome, full stop. But here's the annoying part that nobody tells you until you're freezing to death at 2am: you need the Wishbone from Bonemass just to actually locate most of it. Copper and tin you can spot with your eyeballs. Silver? Buried. Underground. In the snow. You're basically playing a game of freeze tag with a metal detector.
I've lost entire weekends to this. Wolves snapping at my heels, my health bar draining from frostbite, me staring at a patch of snow that the Wishbone swears has silver underneath. So let me save you some of that pain. Everything you need to know about getting silver ore in Valheim is below.
Silver exists only in the Mountain biome. Skip the Meadows, skip the Black Forest, skip the Swamp, skip the Plains. You're not going to stumble across it by accident.
What you're hunting for is the Silver Vein. Big rocky deposits that spawn underground up in the mountains.
Two things need to happen before you even think about swinging your pickaxe:
No Wishbone? No Iron Pickaxe? Then you're not ready. Go back. Seriously.
Yeah, this is the big one. Bonemass is the Swamp boss, and the Wishbone drops from him. Without it? You can wander the entire mountain range for literal hours and find basically nothing. The veins are hidden underground. The game doesn't mark them. You're flying blind.
Once Bonemass is dead, the Wishbone goes into your inventory. Here's the thing people miss: you have to equip it. Put it on your hotbar and hold it like a tool. It just sits there doing absolutely nothing if it's chilling in your backpack. I learned this the hard way.
Equipped, it behaves like a weird bone-shaped metal detector. Get near buried silver and it starts pulsing. Get closer and the pulses speed up. Close enough and it's going nuts.
Antler Pickaxe? Bronze Pickaxe? Forget about it. You need the Iron Pickaxe. No exceptions.
Iron comes from the Swamp. That means tracking down Sunken Crypts, digging up Muddy Scrap Piles, smelting the scrap iron, and crafting the pickaxe. It feels like a ton of prep work, and it is. But iron gear is basically a requirement before you set foot in the Mountains anyway, so you were going to need it regardless.
Mountains are cold. Ridiculously cold. Walk up there without any frost protection and you'll start taking frost damage immediately. You will die. Probably on a cliff. Probably while a wolf watches.
Chug a Frost Resistance Mead before you go. Or once you've got wolf pelts, wear the Wolf Armor Cape. You can plop down campfires in some spots to warm up, but honestly? The mead is way less hassle for a long mining run.
Grab some decent health and stamina food too. Wolves, Drakes, and Stone Golems will all try to end your adventure.
Three things I wish someone had told me before my first mountain trip:
- Don't go hiking at night. Cold + wolves + can't see squat = you're not having fun.
- Don't burn all your stamina climbing cliffs. Keep some in reserve. You'll need it to run or fight.
- Don't forget the Frost Resistance Mead. Freezing mid-climb while your health bar melts is one of the worst feelings in this game.
Alright, the real question: where do you find silver ore in the Mountain biome?
Stick to the big ones. Those tiny snowy foothills? They barely count as a mountain, and they rarely have silver. You want a real mountain. Steep cliffs. Snowstorms. Rocky terrain everywhere. If it looks dangerous, that's probably where the silver is.
Places worth checking:
Most veins are buried, so your eyes aren't going to help much. Every now and then you'll spot a weird silver glint poking out of a cliff face, but that's the exception, not the rule. The Wishbone is your real tool here.
Equip it and walk around. That's it. Just walk. The Wishbone puts out a visible pulse with a sound effect, and you watch for it.
Slow pulse? You're far away. Getting faster? You're close. So fast it looks like it's vibrating? You're standing directly on top of a silver vein.
Drop the bone, grab the pickaxe, and start digging.
Clean order of operations:
Strike out after hours of wandering? You're probably making one of these.
This is the one I see people make all the time. No Wishbone, no silver. You'll spend the whole trip wandering around like an idiot. The game gives you the Wishbone for a reason — use it.
Even if you somehow stumble onto a vein, a Bronze Pickaxe won't do the job. It just doesn't work. Bring the Iron Pickaxe.
Having it in your bag isn't enough. You have to equip it and hold it for the pulse to show up. It sounds obvious, but I've seen so many people miss this.
That tiny snowy hill? Not a mountain. If the biome is barely big enough to qualify, it probably doesn't have silver veins. Go find a proper large Mountain biome.
Mountains will freeze you out if you're not ready. Always bring Frost Resistance Mead, wolf armor, or have a campfire backup plan. Dying from cold is embarrassing. Trust me, I've done it.
Kill Bonemass, the swamp boss. He's in the Swamp biome, usually near a giant skull structure. Beat him, he drops the Wishbone.
Yes. Silver veins require an Iron Pickaxe. Antler and Bronze won't cut it. Check your Iron Pickaxe's durability before you leave for the Mountains.
Rarely. Sometimes a tiny piece of a vein sticks out of the ground or a cliff. But chasing that is a huge waste of time. The Wishbone is the intended way — it detects hidden veins so you're not digging randomly across every snowy hill on the map.
Check if it's actually equipped. If you're holding another tool or weapon, it won't pulse. Also make sure you're in a large Mountain biome. Tiny hills or low-level mountains might not have any silver nearby. Keep walking and watch the pulse speed closely.
Silver in Valheim is all about prep. Beat Bonemass, bring your Iron Pickaxe, gear up for the cold, and let the Wishbone do its thing. Once you crack open that first Silver Vein, you're on your way to Wolf Armor, Frostner, and all the other Mountain-tier gear you've been eyeing.
