Where to Find Onion Seeds in Valheim (Mountain Guide)
Been hunting for onion seeds in Valheim and coming up empty? Quick version: you've gotta go to the Mountain biome. They don't spawn in the Meadows, Black Forest, or Swamp. Those cold, snowy slopes are the only place wild onion seeds show up. Once you actually know what you're looking for, they're not that hard to spot. Setting up a proper farm takes a little planning, but trust me — it pays for itself the second you've got a steady onion soup supply.
Onions aren't just some random vegetable you stumble over. They unlock some of the best mid-game food in the whole game, especially onion soup. That soup gives you a solid health and stamina boost without needing any fancy rare ingredients. If you're getting ready for Mountain or Plains stuff, having a decent onion stash completely changes how prepared you feel.
Here's the catch though — you can't just make onion seeds out of thin air. You have to find that first batch out in the wild. And the only place wild onion seeds spawn is the Mountain biome. So if you're sick of surviving on cooked meat and mushrooms, make finding onions a priority.
Onion seeds show up as small, glowing plants on the ground in the Mountain biome. You'll usually run into them near rocks, along snowy slopes, or tucked into little clearings between rock formations. They're not exactly common, but they're not ultra-rare either. Search a decent-sized mountain and you'll probably find at least one or two patches.
Weird detail here: wild onion plants don't actually drop onions. They drop onion seeds. Walk up and press E, and a few seeds go straight into your inventory. So don't expect an onion item from a wild plant — those things are basically just seed spawners.
Prepare for the Mountain biome. You need frost resistance. Drink frost resistance mead before you head up, or wear a wolf cape. Bring a pickaxe too if you feel like mining silver while you're there, though onion hunting mostly just involves walking around. And don't show up on trash food — bring cooked meat or sausages so a wolf or drake doesn't just end you.
Find a real Mountain biome. Look for white, snow-covered peaks. They usually sit near the Black Forest or right next to Meadows. If you haven't mapped one yet, sail or walk along the coast until you spot high snowy mountains. Your map shows grey stone and snow patches from pretty far away, so keep an eye on it.
Check the lower and mid slopes first. Onion seeds love gentle, snowy inclines near big rock clusters. They barely ever show up on sheer cliffs. Don't waste your time climbing every vertical wall you see.
Look for glowing green plants. The onion seed plant is a thin stalk with bright green, glowing seed pods on top. That glow really stands out against the snow. If it's snowing or nighttime, it's even easier to spot. Slow down and actually scan the ground.
Press E to collect the seeds. Each plant usually gives you 2-4 onion seeds. Don't leave any behind. Every single seed matters when you're starting from zero.
Mark the spot on your map. Those plants don't respawn after you pick them, so don't wait around expecting them to come back. But marking the location helps you search the same mountain more carefully later. Similar terrain nearby almost always has more seeds.
Try more than one mountain. Some mountains just don't have onion seeds at all. If one comes up empty, move on to another snowy biome. A bigger mountain almost always has at least one spawn spot.
Picture a small, knee-high green plant with a thin stem and a few bulbous pods at the top that glow soft yellow-green. They're not big like trees or bushes, so you've really got to scan the ground carefully. Don't mix them up with thistle or carrots. Carrots only spawn in the Black Forest, and thistle grows in other biomes. Wild onion seeds are exclusive to Mountain biomes.
Got your first batch of seeds? Time to actually farm them. Onions grow just like carrots or turnips. Cultivate the soil with a cultivator, plant the seeds, wait, and harvest.
Make a cultivated field. Use the cultivator on grass or dirt to make soil patches. Find a flat spot near your base. An open-air field is the easiest way to go.
Plant the onion seeds. Select the seeds, plant them in the soil, and give each one room. Leave at least one empty tile between seeds. Crowding them doesn't speed up growth and it makes harvesting way more annoying.
Wait for them to grow. Onions follow the same growth timer as other crops. Craft, build, or sleep while you wait. They need sunlight and open sky, so they won't grow under a solid roof unless you've got a skylight or open area.
Harvest the onions. When fully grown, you'll see onion bulbs with green tops. Interact with them to collect the onions. Don't eat every single one, though. You need to put some onions into a Seed Maker to get more onion seeds, then replant those.
That's the whole loop: wild seeds → farm onions → Seed Maker → more seeds → endless onions.
Here's where a ton of people mess up. Don't be one of them.
The big one is Onion Soup. Throw 3 onions in a cauldron and you get a solid food that boosts both health and stamina. It's one of the best mid-game foods around, and once your farm is actually producing, it costs basically nothing. Loads of players use onion soup as a staple before hitting the Plains or fighting Bonemass.
Q: Where do onion seeds spawn in Valheim? A: They spawn in the Mountain biome. Look for small, glowing green plants on snowy slopes, usually near rocks or in clearings.
Q: Can I find onion seeds in chests or from mobs? A: Not in normal gameplay. Onion seeds only come from wild harvestable plants in the Mountain biome. They don't drop from enemies and they don't show up in chests. If a server admin spawns them in, that's a whole different thing, but in a regular run, you have to find them in the snow.
Q: Do I need to grow onions in the Mountain biome? A: No. Once you have seeds, you can plant onions anywhere with cultivated soil. They don't need cold weather. They just need outdoor space and sunlight.
Q: How do I get more onion seeds from my farm? A: Use a Seed Maker. Put some harvested onions into it and it converts them into onion seeds. Then replant those. Just don't cook all your onions before doing this.
Q: Is onion soup worth it? A: Absolutely. It's a great mid-game food with solid health and stamina. Once you've got an onion farm going, it's one of the easiest good foods to keep stocked.
So yeah, onion seeds in Valheim only come from the Mountain biome. Bring frost resist, slow down, watch for that green glow, and don't leave any wild seeds behind. Start your farm right after you get home, keep some onions for the Seed Maker, and before long you'll have more onions than you know what to do with.
Happy farming, Viking. Go get those onions.
