If you’re wondering where to find bloodbags in Valheim, stop checking the Mountains and stop killing boars. The answer is the Swamp. Find the murky water and hunt leeches.
Leeches are those long, dark-green slug things swimming around swamp puddles and canals. They don’t look tough, but they can turn you into a poison-stricken corpse real fast if you rush in blind.
Here’s how to farm leeches without losing another Viking to the swamp water.
Bloodbags come from leeches. Nothing else drops them.
You won’t find bloodbags in chests. You won’t loot them from Draugr. And you won’t get them from fishing. If you want a steady supply, you need to hit the Swamp and kill leeches.
Leeches live in the water inside the Swamp biome. They spawn in:
Leeches blend into dark water pretty well. You’ll usually spot them when you see a weird ripple or small movement near the surface. Once you get close, they swim toward you and try to bite.
Their bites can poison you, so don’t farm leeches without some kind of poison resistance plan.
When you kill a leech, it drops at least one bloodbag. In my experience, cleaning out two or three swamp ponds gives you a solid stack. You can scoop the bloodbags right off the water surface — no diving or breaking anything open.
Not every swamp pond is a leech goldmine. Some swamp water is too open or connected to the ocean, so you’ll get a weird mix of leeches, fish, and annoying serpent noises.
The fastest route is to find what I call “leech puddles”:
These puddles usually hold two to four leeches at a time. Clear one, then move to another small pool nearby. By the time you loop back, more leeches have often spawned in the first puddle.
If you want a reliable route, open your map and find a large Swamp with at least two or three interior water areas marked by darker green. Then clear each water patch from solid ground. You don’t need a special seed — any swamp with visible pools works.
This is the routine I use whenever I need bloodbags for mead brewing. It’s simple, safe, and only needs basic swamp gear.
If you have Poison Resistance Mead, drink it before you start. Leeches poison you, and so do the slimy blobs you’ll probably meet on the way to the water.
That poison can stack and melt your health bar while you’re trying to loot bloodbags.
No poison resistance yet? Don’t panic. You can still farm leeches safely from higher ground or a Crypt roof. Just keep your distance and use a bow.
Leeches are small and sit low to the water. Swinging a sword often whiffs right over their heads.
A bow is my favorite tool because you can stand on the swamp bank and shoot leeches before they even reach you.
For backup, carry a spear or a mace. Spears give you a nice downward poke when a leech reaches shallow water. Maces work too when the leech gets close to your feet. But the bow does the main work.
Don’t jump straight into the water when you spot a promising pool. Move slowly along the bank and watch for leeches swimming toward you.
If you run, you might miss the subtle movement in the murky water. The first time I did this, I thought the pool was empty. Then two leeches came out of nowhere and hit me before I could react. Now I always give the water a few seconds to show its residents.
Take out leeches one by one with your bow. Aim slightly below the waterline when they’re far away, because their bodies are mostly underwater. When they get close to the edge, they’re easier to hit.
If multiple leeches swarm over, back up a few steps. They’ll leave the water to chase you briefly. That’s your best chance to smack them with melee. Just don’t get surrounded by blobs while you focus on the leeches.
Leech bodies don’t disappear right away. Bloodbags float on the surface, so you can walk into shallow water just enough to collect them.
Don’t swim out to the deep middle of the pond unless you really have to. Leeches can still be alive in other parts of the water, and swimming makes you slow and vulnerable.
I usually wait until the water looks clear, then crouch at the bank and grab the floating bloodbags. If a few are just out of reach, wading one or two steps into the swamp is fine.
After you finish one pool, move to the next small water area in the same swamp. Keep an eye on the mini-map so you don’t wander into a Draugr village or an Abomination spawn area while chasing leeches.
When you loop back to the first pool, new leeches may have spawned. In one play session, I’ve collected between twelve and twenty bloodbags from a medium-sized swamp just by rotating between three puddles.
New player warning: Don’t do this at night. Wraiths will show up and ruin your day while you’re lining up bow shots.
Need a bigger batch? Wait for a new day and return to the same swamp. Valheim’s enemies respawn over time, and leeches do too.
You can also sail to another swamp and repeat the route. In my current world, I keep a small portal near a swamp with two leech ponds so I can pop in for a quick bloodbag restock whenever my mead stock runs low.
Bloodbags aren’t just gross swamp loot. You need them for some of the most useful items in the game:
So the farming isn’t just busywork. Every bloodbag you collect goes straight into making your Viking tougher.
Leech farming looks easy, but people still die. Here are the mistakes I’ve made or seen others make.
Going in without poison resistance. Leeches can poison you with their bites, but the Swamp has plenty of other poison sources too. Blobs explode with poison gas. A fight with a leech can quickly turn into a fight against a poison blob swarm. Bring poison resistance or fight from a distance.
Swimming into the middle of the pond to grab loot. I know, the bloodbag is floating right there. But the moment you swim, your stamina drains fast. If two leeches or a Draugr show up, you have no ground to fight from. Wade only in shallow edges. Use the bank to shoot leeches one at a time, and loot carefully.
Farming at night. Leeches still spawn at night, but the Swamp also spawns Wraiths. Wraiths fly over water and puddles, and they’ll kill you while you’re aiming at a leech. Unless you’re very overgeared, do your bloodbag farming during the day.
Using the wrong weapon. One sword swing that goes over a leech’s head can let the poison bite land. Leeches sit low and move weirdly. A bow solves the accuracy problem. If you must melee, use a spear or mace and wait until the leech is almost on land.
Forgetting that bloodbags are the whole point. You’ll probably run into Draugr, skeletons, blobs, and even Abominations while looking for leech ponds. It’s easy to get distracted and waste your poison resistance and health. If you only need bloodbags, focus on the water. Stay close to the water edges and don’t go on long detours through the swamp interior.
New player warning: Don’t grab loot from the middle of the water. That’s how you drown, get poisoned, or both.
New player warning: Always watch for blobs sneaking up behind you when you’re farming from the bank. They’ll pop and poison you before you can deal with the leech.
In Valheim, leeches are the main source of bloodbags. Almost every leech kill gives you a bloodbag. Sometimes you’ll get one, sometimes a little extra, but you won’t need to kill a hundred leeches to get a decent stack. If the water has leeches, you have a working bloodbag farm.
No. Bloodbags are a crafting resource, not food. You can store them in a chest as long as you want and use them later for mead. They also stack in your inventory, so you can carry a decent supply out of a swamp run.
No. Bloodbags only come from the Swamp biome. Leeches don’t spawn in Meadows or Black Forest water. You have to reach a Swamp. If you’re undergeared, wait until you have at least a bronze weapon and some anti-poison options. Then make a quick trip to the nearest Swamp and farm those leech puddles.
Keep at least ten to twenty bloodbags once you unlock mead brewing. That gives you enough for a few Poison Resistance Meads and Medium Healing Meads. Later, you’ll want more for advanced recipes. I store a full stack of thirty to forty after every major Swamp session. It never hurts to have extra bloodbags when the next boss fight asks for better healing.
