Ready for the best iridium ore farming route in Stardew Valley? Then the Skull Cavern is the only place you should be spending your mining days. Unlike the regular Mines, it has no elevator, every floor is randomly generated, and the reward for going deep is simple: more iridium.

Don’t look for a fixed path on a map. This route is a time-based game plan: check your luck, warp to the Desert early, bomb your way down fast, hit the deep floors, and farm the purple nodes before 2 AM. That’s the whole secret.

Most players waste hours digging shallow floors with a pickaxe and come home with almost nothing. I did the same thing when I first started hitting the Skull Cavern. The trip that changed everything was the first time I treated floors 1–99 as just a way to get somewhere better.

Why does it work? Iridium node spawn rates go up the deeper you go. Around floor 100 you’ll start seeing them regularly, and below floor 150 they’re hard to miss.

If you stop to mine every single rock on floor 30, you’re losing time that could be spent on a floor with twice or three times the iridium. So this route is built around one main idea: speed first, mining second.

Food and Drink Buffs

You can stack one food buff and one drink buff at the same time, and that’s important. A good food + drink combo turns you into a cavern-clearing machine.

Spicy Eel is the best all-around food for this run. It gives +1 Luck and +1 Speed. You can buy it from the Desert Trader for 1 Ruby, or cook it yourself.

Lucky Lunch is the stronger luck food if you want maximum luck. It gives +3 Luck, but no speed.

Triple Shot Espresso is the best drink for this route because it gives +1 Speed. Coffee works too, but Triple Shot Espresso lasts longer.

Bring healing food too. Cheese, salads, or purple mushrooms are solid choices. Don’t rely only on buff food.

One food, one drink. Don’t eat two foods, or the second one will cancel your Spicy Eel or Lucky Lunch buff.

New player warning: Mega Bombs don’t care who’s standing nearby. Back off before they pop, or you’ll eat your own blast.

Bombs, Stairs, and Gear

Mega Bombs are your main tool. Bring at least 50–70, seriously. You aren’t mining with a pickaxe on this run—you’re blasting.

Staircases are lifesavers, so bring at least 10–15 to skip bad floors. The easiest trick? Put Jade in Crystalariums and trade it to the Desert Trader on Sundays, when 1 Jade = 1 Staircase. That’s one of the best farming tricks in the game.

Use your best weapon. The Galaxy Sword is ideal because Skull Cavern monsters hit hard, especially Serpents.

Bring a Farm Totem or Return Scepter so you can leave at 1:50 AM without passing out. A Slingshot with Explosive Ammo is optional, but it’s great for breaking far-away rocks.

If you have the Miner Profession, even better. It gives you +1 ore from each ore node, and that applies to iridium nodes too.

New player warning: Always keep at least one staircase in reserve. You don’t want to end up stranded on a monster-packed floor with no escape.

Step 1: Check Your Daily Luck

Before you spend a single bomb, turn on your TV and watch The Spirits. Daily luck affects how often you find ladders and shafts.

On a day when the spirits are “very happy,” your run will feel much smoother. On a day when they’re “displeased,” you’ll waste more time digging and dodging monsters. If you can wait for a good luck day, wait.

Step 2: Start the Day in the Desert Early

The bus gets you to the desert, but it won’t get you there early enough. The best move is to use a Desert Warp Totem at 6:00 AM. That gives you almost the whole day inside the cavern.

If you don’t have warp totems yet, you can buy them from the Desert Trader with Omni Geodes. The earlier you arrive, the deeper you’ll get.

Step 3: Push Through Floors 1–99 Like a Speedrunner

From the moment you enter the Skull Cavern, your job is simple: find the ladder or shaft and go down. Don’t mine individual rocks. Don’t chase every single iridium ore that appears on floor 25. Ignore the shiny stuff for now.

Here’s what you do on each early floor:

Whenever you land on a slow floor that wastes your time—a huge spiral floor or one packed with monsters—just use a staircase and move on. This is why you brought stairs.

Step 4: Reach Floor 100 Before You Start Heavy Mining

Once you hit floor 100, the real farming route begins. This is the depth where iridium nodes become reliably common. From here on, you can start collecting ore in earnest.

But don’t treat every floor like a treasure hunt. Stay in speed mode until you see actual purple nodes. If a floor doesn’t have iridium after one or two bombs, leave instead of clearing it.

Step 5: Farm the Rich Floors and Keep Pushing

Once you’re past floor 100, use this pattern on every floor:

Iridium nodes are hard to miss. They’re shiny purple rocks with dark spots, and they stand out against the green and gray of the cavern. When you see a group, bomb the whole cluster and collect everything.

Don’t get too greedy on one floor. It’s tempting to mine every last rock, but the next floor might have two full iridium clusters waiting for you. The route works best when you keep a steady rhythm: bomb, collect, descend, repeat.

Step 6: End the Run Safely

Keep an eye on the clock. At around 1:40 AM, stop what you’re doing and use a Farm Totem or Return Scepter. If you pass out in the Skull Cavern, you can lose items, and nobody wants that after a great run.

Floors 100–150 are a great farming range. If your run is going incredibly well and you still have bombs left, keep pushing deeper. Iridium density keeps climbing as you descend, and some players push past floor 200 for insane hauls.

What depth should I aim for before I start farming iridium?

Try to reach floor 100 as fast as possible. If you’re using lots of staircases and bombing well, floor 150 is even better. Iridium node density increases with depth, so every extra floor you skip on the way down is almost like adding to your farming luck.

Do I really need to trade Jade for Staircases?

Yes—put a few Crystalariums to work duplicating Jade. Every Sunday, the Desert Trader trades 1 Jade for 1 Staircase, which turns your Crystalarium collection into a staircase factory and makes Skull Cavern runs way less stressful. You can also craft staircases with 99 stone if you’re in a pinch.

Should I sell iridium ore or turn it into bars?

Turn it into bars first. Iridium bars are used for tool upgrades, the Iridium Sprinkler, the Slime Hutch, and several late-game crafting recipes. You’ll need a ton of iridium for upgrades, so don’t sell ore early unless you genuinely have enough for everything you need.

How many bombs should I bring per run?

Bring at least 60 Mega Bombs. If you’re planning a deep run to floor 150 or 200, bring 80–100. Running out of bombs mid-run ruins your route because you’ll end up back on the pickaxe life.

FAQ
