Krobus is easily my favorite weirdo in Stardew Valley, and if you've somehow ignored the shadow guy down in the Sewers, you're missing out. He doesn't marry you or throw a wedding cutscene, sure, but at max hearts he actually moves into your farmhouse. This is the whole playbook for getting there.
Krobus is the shadow monster who lives in the Sewers. He isn't a marriage candidate, but he's still one of the best NPCs to befriend in the whole game. He sells rare loot, and at 10 hearts he can move into your farmhouse as a permanent roommate. I spent my first farm completely skipping him, and I still kick myself over it.
You can't meet Krobus until you unlock the Sewers. There's only one way to do it: donate 60 items to the Museum. No shortcuts, no alternate routes. Just fill that Museum.
I remember spending an embarrassing number of in-game days staring at that locked grate before I realized I needed to actually go donate stuff. Don't be me.
Fastest way to 60 donations: Go mining. Geodes are everywhere in the Mines, and every Geode you crack open gives you a mineral or artifact for the Museum. Spend a few in-game days breaking geodes at Clint's shop, and you'll unlock the Sewers before the end of your first season.
New player warning: don't skip those wiggly worm spots. They're easy artifact donations and can push you toward 60 way faster. I used to walk right past them because I thought they were decoration. They're not decoration.
Krobus is a Shadow Person, one of the monster kinds that live in the mines. Unlike his scary cousins, he's shy, polite, and just wants to chill in the dark. He runs a tiny shop in the Sewers that sells monster loot like Bat Wings, Void Essence, and Solar Essence.
Here's the part that matters: he also sells a Void Egg for 5,000g, a Stardrop for 20,000g, and an Iridium Sprinkler every Friday for 10,000g. The Stardrop gives you a permanent max energy boost, so Krobus is one NPC you really don't want to ignore. That Stardrop alone is worth the whole friendship grind.
Krobus's gift tastes are weird. Standard gifts that work for other NPCs, like vegetables and fruit, are a complete waste on him. He's a shadow monster, so think void, minerals, and caves. Bring him a parsnip and he'll look at you like you've lost your mind.
Pro tip — the Void Chicken trick: Buy one Void Egg from Krobus, but don't gift it yet. Hatch it in a Chicken Coop first. That gives you a Void Chicken, and Void Chickens lay Void Eggs regularly. Now you have an endless supply of Krobus's favorite gift for free. This single move made my whole Krobus friendship run way easier — I never spent another coin on gifts after that.
New player warning: don't sell your first Void Egg! Hatch it first. That egg is your ticket to a Void Chicken and unlimited future gifts.
Out of Void Eggs? Almost any mineral or gem is a safe liked gift. Quartz, Emerald, Frozen Tear, Fire Quartz, and other mining loot all work. Artifacts from artifact spots also count as liked. These aren't as strong as loved gifts, but they're a solid backup plan when you're low on resources. I've dumped so many spare Quartz stacks on Krobus over the years that he probably has a tiny hoard of them by now.
Don't give Krobus normal crops, fish, or cooked meals. Most of those are neutral at best. If you hand him something he dislikes, he'll let you know immediately. Remember: you only get two gift slots per week, so never waste one on a random item you're just trying to offload. Make every gift count.
The easiest part of befriending him: Krobus doesn't have a schedule. Seriously. He stands in the Sewers every single day, in every season, in any weather. No morning strolls, no trips to the Saloon, no rainy-day hiding spots. He's always there, behind his little shop counter.
That means you can talk to him and give him gifts at any time without chasing him across the map. For me, that makes him one of the easiest NPCs to befriend in the entire game — you literally can't miss him. Try doing that with Penny or Elliott, who vanish somewhere different every Tuesday.
The only schedule change happens if he becomes your roommate. Once he moves into your farmhouse, that's where he stays. You can still talk to him and give him gifts there.
Don't put this off. If your goal is full hearts with Krobus, the Museum grind is your top priority. Break geodes, donate everything, and get into those Sewers as fast as possible. Every day you wait is a day of free friendship points you're leaving on the table.
Talking gives you a small friendship gain every day. Since Krobus never moves, you just walk into the Sewers and chat. Make it part of your daily routine whenever you're in town. I tend to stop by on my way home from the mines, since I'm already in the neighborhood.
Every NPC accepts two gifts per week, and birthday gifts don't count toward that limit. Use both slots on Void Eggs, Void Mayonnaise, Gold Bars, or Wild Horseradish. Consistency matters way more than trying to cram all the friendship in at once.
Krobus's birthday is Winter 1, and birthday gifts give 8x the normal friendship points. One loved gift on his birthday is worth more than an entire week of regular gifts. Give him a Void Egg or Gold Bar and watch his hearts jump — you'll gain about two and a half hearts in a single day.
Once Krobus reaches 10 hearts, he starts selling a Void Ghost Pendant in his shop for 10,000g. Buy it, give it to him, and choose the option to invite him to be your roommate. If you're single, he'll move right into your farmhouse and become your permanent shadow roommate.
If you talk every day and give two loved gifts every week, you'll hit 10 hearts in about two in-game seasons. His birthday bonus speeds things up even more. Honestly, the hardest part is remembering to keep gifting consistently — the friendship system does the rest. I've had runs where I forgot about him for a week and felt the progress drag to a crawl.
New player warning: don't blow all your gold on the Stardrop before you've got 10 hearts. You'll need 10,000g for the Void Ghost Pendant if you want Krobus to move in.
Once Krobus is your roommate, you get one of the most unique living situations in Stardew Valley. He doesn't act like a spouse. He just hangs out at your farmhouse and does his own thing. You can keep talking to him and giving him gifts, and he stays way more chill than most NPCs.
No drama, no weird demands — just a little shadow buddy living in your house. Many players, me included, think it's the best ending for any NPC friendship.
Even with a good plan, players mess these up. Avoid these and you'll hit max hearts much faster.
No. Krobus isn't a marriage candidate. But at 10 hearts, you can buy a Void Ghost Pendant from him for 10,000g. Give it to him and invite him to be your roommate. It's not a wedding, but he'll be your permanent farmhouse buddy.
Void Eggs and Void Mayonnaise are the best gifts for Krobus. They're both loved gifts, and once you hatch a Void Chicken from a Void Egg, you'll have a never-ending supply. Wild Horseradish, Gold Bars, and Diamonds are also great options.
In the Sewers. He's there all day, every day, until he moves into your farmhouse as your roommate. After that, he stays home with you.
Ten. Hit 10 hearts, then buy the Void Ghost Pendant from his shop for 10,000g and give it to him. He'll move in as long as you're single.
