This Stardew Valley ancient fruit vs starfruit comparison breaks down growth time, seed cost, profit per season, and wine value to settle the ultimate cash crop debate.
Stardew Valley Ancient Fruit vs Starfruit: Which Crop Actually Earns More Gold?
If you've ever stood in your greenhouse staring at the empty tiles and wondered, "Ancient Fruit vs Starfruit—which one actually earns more?" you're far from the only one. Both crops churn out absurdly good wine. Running them feels completely different, though, and picking wrong means either wasted seeds or a greenhouse that never pays off.
Ancient Fruit earns more gold per tile over time once it's established. Starfruit has the bigger single-bottle value and is way easier to scale once you can actually buy the seeds in bulk.
Seed costs, growth time, profit per season, wine value—all of it matters depending on where you are in your farm.
Quick rundown of where the two crops diverge.
| Crop | Seed Access / Cost | Days To Mature | Regrows? | Raw Fruit Value | Base Wine Value | Artisan Wine Value |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ancient Fruit | Ancient Seeds from artifact / Seed Maker; not sold by regular shops | 28 days | Yes, every 7 days | 550g | 1,650g | 2,310g |
| Starfruit | Oasis in the Desert, 400g per seed | 13 days | No | 750g | 2,250g | 3,150g |
Wine value is always 3x the fruit value. Pick the Artisan profession and that jumps another 40%. Keep that in your head because it changes every number below.
Ancient Fruit is one of those "plant it and forget it" crops that Stardew players rave about for a reason. The seed packet is called Ancient Seeds. It takes 28 days to mature. After that, each plant hands you one Ancient Fruit every 7 days, forever.
Outside, it grows in Spring, Summer, and Fall. Stick it in the Greenhouse and it grows all year round, no replanting, no new seed purchases, no fuss. That saves you both gold and a ridiculous amount of time.
A mature Ancient Fruit plant sitting in your Greenhouse gives you about 4 fruit every 28-day season. With Artisan wine, that works out to:
4 x 2,310g = 9,240g per plant per month
And you're not dropping gold on a fresh seed every time you harvest.
The real win with Ancient Fruit is how low-maintenance it is. Once the patch is established, it just keeps cranking out fruit while you go off and build kegs, water the rest of your farm, or pass out at the saloon. I stopped stressing about greenhouse income the day my Ancient Fruit patch matured.
Starfruit is a high-value single-harvest crop. It takes 13 days to mature, and then it's done—pulled up, gone, no regrowth. Want another round? You're buying more Starfruit Seeds and planting them again.
Outdoors it only grows in Summer. In the Greenhouse or on Ginger Island, it can grow anytime. Because it's single-harvest, that seed cost hits your profit every single cycle.
Here's what trips people up:
A Starfruit seed costs 400g. A raw Starfruit sells for 750g.
Sell it raw and you're clearing 350g profit before you've even walked near a Keg. That's underwhelming.
Turn it into wine and the math gets a lot friendlier:
That's a bigger profit per individual harvest than Ancient Fruit Wine. But it only takes 13 days once, and the plant doesn't come back.
If you want one honest answer to "which crop earns more gold," don't compare a single bottle. Compare a full 28-day season.
Ancient Fruit Profit After It's Mature
Once an Ancient Fruit plant is established, it produces every 7 days. That works out to roughly 4 harvests in a 28-day Greenhouse season.
With Artisan Wine:
4 Ancient Fruit Wines x 2,310g = 9,240g
No seed cost to subtract because the plant keeps regrowing on its own.
Starfruit Profit In The Same Window
Starfruit takes 13 days to mature. With tight timing, you can squeeze two rounds into a 28-day Greenhouse season if you plant on day one and replant the second the previous crop comes out.
With Artisan Wine:
2 Starfruit Wines x 3,150g = 6,300g gross
Now subtract two Starfruit Seeds:
6,300g - 800g = 5,500g net profit
Starfruit is still printing money. Ancient Fruit just earns more gold per tile over time, plain and simple.
The reason Starfruit stays so popular is seed access. You can walk into Sandy's Oasis and buy Starfruit Seeds in bulk, no RNG involved. Ancient Fruit seeds are a nightmare to scrounge together early on.
Once your Ancient Fruit Greenhouse is actually running, it usually beats Starfruit for steady, low-effort gold.
Once you've got enough Ancient Fruit plants to cover your Greenhouse, stop feeding fruit into the Seed Maker and save the whole harvest for wine.
New player warning: If you ever dig up an Ancient Seed artifact, don't sell it. Donate it to the Museum right away. That's what unlocks plantable Ancient Seeds, and that's where the whole Ancient Fruit snowball starts. I almost sold mine in year one and I still get shivers thinking about it.
Starfruit only gives one harvest per plant. If you want Starfruit wine flowing all year, you need either a steady seed supply or a genuinely serious seed budget.
New player warning: Don't go nuts at Sandy's. Buying hundreds of Starfruit Seeds at 400g each adds up way faster than you'd think. Run out of cash and you can't replant, and suddenly your whole wine operation stalls out.
Forgetting that Starfruit doesn't regrow. Every Starfruit plant gives one fruit and then vanishes. You'll need to buy or craft new seeds for every single harvest.
Comparing gross Starfruit Wine without subtracting seed cost. Starfruit Wine sells for 3,150g with Artisan. But a seed costs 400g, so your real profit is 2,750g, not the full 3,150g. Ancient Fruit doesn't have that problem after the first planting.
Thinking Ancient Fruit is a quick summer crop. Ancient Fruit needs 28 days to mature. Plant it outside on Summer 1 and you won't see much value until late summer or early fall. It's much better in the Greenhouse or started early in Spring.
Planting Ancient Fruit outside in Winter. Ancient Fruit dies in Winter if planted outdoors. If you want year-round production, keep your main Ancient Fruit patch in the Greenhouse.
Buying tons of Starfruit Seeds without a game plan. At 400g each, seed costs stack up quicker than you'd think. Buy too many and you can't afford to replant, and your farm stalls. Start small, then scale up when you've actually got enough cash.
Which earns more gold, Ancient Fruit or Starfruit?
Ancient Fruit earns more gold per tile over time once it's mature. In the Greenhouse, a mature Ancient Fruit plant can make more Artisan Wine profit per season than Starfruit, mostly because it regrows every 7 days and doesn't need another 400g seed every time.
Is Starfruit Wine worth more than Ancient Fruit Wine?
Yes. Starfruit Wine sells for more per bottle.
Starfruit Wine has the better single-bottle value. Ancient Fruit is still better for steady income because you get more harvests per season with way less effort.
Should I fill my Greenhouse with Ancient Fruit or Starfruit?
For most late-game farms, Ancient Fruit is the better Greenhouse crop. It takes longer to set up, but once it's running, it produces every 7 days with no seed cost and no replanting.
Starfruit is still great if you want higher-value individual wine bottles, especially outside in Summer before you've built up a strong Ancient Fruit field.
How do I get more Ancient Fruit seeds?
Put Ancient Fruit into a Seed Maker. That's the fastest way to turn one plant into many.
Early on, don't turn all your first Ancient Fruits into wine. Feed a few into the Seed Maker so you can expand your field faster.
