Learn exactly how to use Larval Tear at Rennala for respec in Elden Ring, including where to find them and the best rebirth tips.
Elden Ring: Rennala Respec and Larval Tears Guide — Where to Find Them and How to Rebirth Your Build
Broken build? Been there. Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, is your reset button.
She lets you redo all the stat points you got from leveling. Every rebirth costs one Larval Tear. Honestly? Those things disappear fast if you're not careful.
New player warning: don't even walk into the Grand Library unless you actually have a Larval Tear in your inventory. You'll just waste a trip.
This guide covers how to unlock Rennala's rebirth, where to find Larval Tears, how to respec step by step, and the dumb mistakes that eat your tears.
Elden Ring doesn't have a menu reset button. Put 40 points into Arcane and never touch dragon spells? Then you're stuck — unless you go talk to Rennala.
Her Rebirth system is the game's only real respec. Here's the deal:
So a Vagabond can't suddenly become an Astrologer. But you can move every point you've earned from leveling, which is huge if you want to ditch a strength build for sorcery or save a character you messed up.
You can't respec until you beat Rennala. Here's how to get her friendly.
Grab the Academy Glintstone Key. You'll need this to get into Raya Lucaria Academy — it's on a corpse in the lake around the academy, near the broken stone arches where Glintstone Dragon Smarag hangs out. You can grab it and run, so no need to fight the dragon.
Travel to Raya Lucaria Academy. Head north through Liurnia of the Lakes. The main gate is on the south side of the academy complex.
Use the key on the main gate. Walk up to the glowing seal on the gate and press the prompt to use the Academy Glintstone Key.
Fight through the academy — the path to Rennala is mostly linear once you're inside. Expect magic crossbows, sorcerers, and a ton of annoying marionette soldiers, but just push toward the big library door at the far end.
Defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon. This one's a two-phase fight: first kill the little glowing scholars around her until her golden shell breaks, then attack her. In phase two she spams spells and summons spirits, so stay close and don't give her any breathing room.
Rest at the Grand Library Site of Grace. After the fight, the boss room becomes a safe area with a Site of Grace called Grand Library.
Talk to Rennala. She's sitting in the center of the room. Speak to her and choose Rebirth to open the respec menu.
Now you're one Larval Tear away from a brand-new build.
Larval Tears are a limited resource. They don't drop from normal enemies, so you can't farm them the way you farm runes.
Here are some easy ones to grab during a normal playthrough:
Village of the Albinaurics (Liurnia): From the village Site of Grace, drop down toward the lower cliffs and search the ruined buildings near the water. There's a corpse with one Larval Tear.
Nokron, Eternal City (Mimic Tear arena): After you defeat the Mimic Tear boss, explore the building leading out of the boss room. Check the stone platforms above you — one Larval Tear is on a body.
Nokron, Eternal City (lower ant area): In the flooded lower section of Nokron where the giant ants crawl around, look for a corpse on one of the ledges near the cliff walls.
Nokstella, Eternal City: Head to the main plaza area near the Nokstella Site of Grace. Search the bodies around the Silver Tear enemies, and you'll find one.
Sellia, Town of Sorcery (Caelid): One Larval Tear is hidden inside a locked building in the middle of town. Circle around the back of that building to find the other entrance.
If you start a New Game Plus, you can collect another batch of Larval Tears. On your current run, treat each one like treasure.
New player warning: Nokron and Nokstella can hit hard. Bring a decent weapon and some patience.
Once Rennala is friendly, the process only takes a couple minutes.
New player warning: before you hit confirm, double-check your weapon and spell requirements. It's a pain to respec and then realize you can't use what you brought.
If you change your mind inside the menu before confirming, you can back out and keep your Larval Tear. The tear is only consumed when the rebirth actually goes through.
Even experienced players mess this up. Don't be one of them.
Going to Rennala without a Larval Tear. You'll run all the way to the Grand Library, pick Rebirth, and nothing happens. Always double-check your inventory first.
Leaving points unspent. The rebirth screen won't let you confirm until every point is assigned. If you're stuck, count your stats and spend what's left.
Dropping a stat below your gear requirements. After rebirth, you might not have enough Strength or Dexterity to wield your weapon. Check your weapon, shield, and spell requirements before you lock anything in.
Respeccing on impulse. Larval Tears are finite. If you're thinking, "I'll just try this for a bit," you might waste a tear and want it back later.
Forgetting you can't change your starting class. Rebirth can't turn a Hero into a Confessor. The base stats you started with stay locked forever.
Confusing appearance changes with rebirth. Rennala also lets you change your character's face and body, but that cosmetic option is free — it doesn't consume a Larval Tear. Don't waste a tear on a haircut.
These tips will help you get the most out of every Larval Tear.
Know your weapon requirements before you respec. If you're switching to the Moonveil Katana, make sure you have the right Dexterity and Intelligence before you spend the tear.
Keep one Larval Tear in reserve. Use one to experiment, but always keep a backup in case your new build is a disaster.
Don't dump everything into damage. You still need Vigor and Endurance. A glass cannon hurts a lot more in Elden Ring than in most games.
Respec before a big boss fight. Stuck on Malenia with a slow weapon? Respec into a faster, lighter build for that specific fight. It's a totally valid strategy.
Plan your stats outside the game. Write down the numbers you want, or use an online build planner. It saves you from staring at the stat screen for 20 minutes.
Honestly, I've wasted my fair share of Larval Tears on "cool build ideas" that lasted about an hour. The builds that worked were the ones I planned before I touched the confirm button.
Can I respec more than once at Rennala? Yes. There's no cooldown and no limit. As long as you have at least one Larval Tear, you can rebirth as many times as you want.
Does rebirth cost runes? Nope. The only cost is one Larval Tear. No runes, no smithing stones, no other materials.
Where is the easiest Larval Tear to get early? The one at the Village of the Albinaurics in Liurnia is probably your best bet. You can get there early in the game, and the Larval Tear is close to the Site of Grace.
Can I change my appearance at Rennala without using a Larval Tear? Yes. Rennala's appearance change option is completely separate from rebirth and doesn't cost a Larval Tear. Use that whenever you want to restyle your character for free.
