Chasing a straight answer on how to actually get into Deeproot Depths? Fair. Almost every Tarnished I know wanders around this place confused at first, because the game basically hides the entrance from you. There's no dungeon door. No NPC stands there pointing. You have to beat a boss, climb into a random coffin, and let the game carry you somewhere you didn't know existed.

Two ways in. One runs through Nokron and ends at the Valiant Gargoyles. The other drags you through Ranni's whole quest up to Astel. Neither is wrong, but they demand very different things from your build and your patience. Everything below is what actually happens on each route, plus the stuff I messed up so you don't have to.

Two routes to Deeproot Depths

Route 1: The Nokron Path

Most people come in through Nokron, Eternal City. You push through the Siofra Aqueduct, drop the Valiant Gargoyles at the end, and hop into the coffin sitting behind their arena. If you're already working on Fia's questline, this is the path that makes sense. Pick it if Nokron is already on your map.

Step-by-Step Through the Nokron Route

1. Beat Starscourge Radahn first.
Skip this and nothing opens. The meteor crater only shows up after Radahn goes down in Caelid. That's the gate for all of Nokron, so go get him out of the way before you even think about Deeproot Depths.

2. Find the crater near Mistwood in Limgrave.
Once Radahn's dead, a massive glowing crater tears open in Mistwood, right by the forest and the Siofra River well. Walk toward the big exposed tree roots and drop down slow. Watch out here—the Siofra River wooden lift nearby drops you into a totally different underground zone with no path to Deeproot Depths at all. I rode that thing down twice before I figured out I was in the wrong hole.

3. Reach the "Nokron, Eternal City" site of grace.
Drop in and just follow the obvious trail. Roots, broken rooftops, the usual Nokron vibes. You'll hit the first grace before long.

4. Make your way to the Siofra Aqueduct.
Keep exploring Nokron until you find the "Ancestral Woods" grace. From there push forward and look for a wide, river-like corridor leading into the aqueduct. A giant waterfall means you nailed it.

5. Fight the Valiant Gargoyles.
Boss fog at the end of the aqueduct. First gargoyle goes down about halfway through and then—yeah—the twinblade one crashes the party. Poison breath everywhere. Bring your strongest spirit summon and don't be shy about circling the arena; standing still gets you stunlocked between both of them.

6. Enter the coffin behind the boss room.
Kill the gargoyles, then walk all the way to the far end of the arena. Big stone coffin just sitting there. Walk up, hit interact, and you nap inside. Screen goes black. You wake at the "Deeproot Depths" grace.

That's the Nokron route in a nutshell. If you're already on Ranni's quest, the second way might save you some backtracking.

Route 2: The Lake of Rot Path

This one runs through Ranni's quest and the Lake of Rot itself. You skip the Valiant Gargoyles entirely—but Astel, Naturalborn of the Void waits for you instead. That's a much later fight, and for a lot of melee builds it's nastier than the gargoyles ever were.

Step-by-Step Through the Lake of Rot Route

1. Progress Ranni's questline.
You need to be far enough along that you've handed over the Fingerslayer Blade and Ranni has vanished from her tower. That's deep. Not started? Go talk to Ranni at Ranni's Rise in Liurnia first, or the rest of this section won't matter.

2. Use the waygate at Renna's Rise.
With Ranni gone, head to the top of Renna's Rise. The broken teleporter that did nothing before now activates and flings you to Ainsel River Main.

3. Follow the river until you hit the Lake of Rot.
Long crawl. You'll cut through Nokstella, Eternal City, and fight way too many ant-like enemies before the "Lake of Rot" grace shows up. The whole lake bubbles with scarlet rot. Pack a cleanse spell, stuff preserving boluses in your pouch, or just hop across the stone pillars sticking out of the gunk. Don't wade.

4. Find the Grand Cloister.
Cross to the far side, find the Grand Cloister entrance, and grab the grace inside. From there just keep dropping down toward the lower caves. Astel's boss fog waits at the end of that path.

5. Defeat Astel, Naturalborn of the Void.
Gross fight. Astel teleports, slings gravity nonsense, and has a grab that deletes you if you get caught. Stay glued to its sides when you can, and run in after those big telegraphed explosions instead of backing off.

6. Take the coffin in Astel's boss room.
Astel drops, and there's another coffin in the back of the arena. Interact, same transport cutscene, same nap. Wake up in Deeproot Depths. Yep, that counts as Deeproot Depths access even though you never touched a single gargoyle.

Common Mistakes That Mess Up Your Deeproot Depths Access

I've watched so many Tarnished lose an hour or more to these. I did half of them myself. Read this part.

  • Going to the wrong crater.
The post-Radahn meteor crater is not the Siofra River elevator shaft. That Mistwood elevator just dumps you into Siofra River, and from there you can wander forever wondering why no path leads to Nokron. Only the crater that appears after Radahn matters. Don't confuse them.

  • Missing the coffin because it looks like scenery.
After I killed the Valiant Gargoyles I assumed the coffin in the back was just decoration. Ten solid minutes I spent poking at fake walls and trying to jump a random root that "felt important." It's interactive. Walk right up to it and the prompt pops.

  • Trying to cross the Lake of Rot without scarlet rot protection.
Not strictly an access problem, but it'll ruin the run anyway. You do not want to chug flasks every two seconds just to reach the opposite shore. Pillars are your stepping stones. Bring boluses even if you're sure you won't need them.

  • Killing Fia when you first see her in Deeproot Depths.
The area's creepy and Fia looks small sitting by that giant skeleton. Resist the urge. Talk to her. You'll eventually fight Fia's Champions and Lichdragon Fortissax if you let her quest play out. Swing at her early and you just locked yourself out of that whole chunk of content.

Deeproot Depths Bosses and What to Expect

Access sorted? Cool, but you're not done. The area has some real fights, though none of them are mandatory just to walk around and look at the map.

  • Fia's Champions – A gang fight against several NPC phantoms, triggered when you walk up to Fia in the lower part of Deeproot Depths. Not a main-boss wall, but four or five phantoms trading blows with you at once will steamroll a greedy build. Separate them near the entrance and use crowd control.

  • Lichdragon Fortissax – The actual boss of this zone, and it's tied to Fia's ending. Beat Fia's Champions, talk to Fia, rest at the nearby grace, talk to her again. She'll eventually ask for something tied to the death root. Help her and you get pulled into a dream arena for Fortissax. Lightning dragon. Huge health pool. Stay behind him when you can and respect the double lightning spear swing.

There are also giant ants and ancestral followers floating around, but those are just regular enemies, not bosses.

FAQ

Can I reach Deeproot Depths without defeating Valiant Gargoyles?
Yes. The Lake of Rot route lets you take the coffin after Astel instead. You still need Radahn down earlier if you plan to open Nokron, but following Ranni's quest far enough skips the Valiant Gargoyles entirely.

Which Deeproot Depths access route is easier?
For most people the Valiant Gargoyles route feels easier—it's reachable earlier and you can lean on a strong spirit summon. Astel spams teleports and AoE all over the room. That said, if you're already deep in Ranni's quest, the Lake of Rot path is just the natural next step.

Do I need to beat Fia in Deeproot Depths?
No. She's friendly, creepy as she looks. Let her quest play out and you'll get Lichdragon Fortissax plus the Death-Prince ending rune. Killing her just chops the questline off early.

Is Deeproot Depths connected to the main story?
Not really. You can finish the whole game without ever setting foot there. But Fia's quest, the Prince of Death lore, and the Lichdragon fight all live in that hidden corner. That's exactly the kind of place Elden Ring rewards you for leaving the critical path to find.
