If you're wondering where to find Sharpening Stones in Valheim, stop poking around the Meadows. I did that on my first run and burned an entire evening smashing stone ruins, only to realize I'd been looking in the wrong biome the whole time. The real answer is boring once you know it: loot chests inside Burial Chambers in the Black Forest. That's it.

You'll want one early because it unlocks the Grinding Wheel next to your Forge, which pushes weapons and armor up to quality levels you can't reach otherwise. Let me save you the same headaches I went through.

Where to find Sharpening Stones in Valheim

Why Do You Need Sharpening Stones?

Sharpening Stones look like throwaway clutter at first glance. They're not. This is the crafting material that builds the Grinding Wheel, one of the Forge upgrades in Valheim.

Your Forge starts at level 1. Upgrading gear past the low-quality tiers needs a higher Forge level, and the Grinding Wheel bumps it by +1. Skip it and you'll hit a wall the second you try to push bronze or iron gear further.

Nine times out of ten, when your sword won't upgrade and you're staring at the Forge confused, it comes down to one thing: you still haven't found a Sharpening Stone.

Where to Find Sharpening Stones: Real Locations

The good part? No boss kill required, no Plains trip. The farm spot is available the moment you can hold your own against skeletons.

Burial Chambers in the Black Forest: Your Best Source

The main place to find Sharpening Stones is the Burial Chamber — a dungeon that spawns in the Black Forest biome. On the map it reads as a small dark structure. In the world it's a big stone tomb sticking out of the ground, usually with a stone door at ground level. Inside you're dealing with skeletons, bone piles, Surtling cores, and wooden chests.

How I farm these:

  1. Bring actual gear, not just a torch. A decent weapon and a shield if you've got one, plus cooked meat for the health buffer. I learned this the hard way.
  2. Get to the Black Forest. It's the darker green biome right after the Meadows, usually close to spawn. Pull up your map and look for it.
  3. Work the edge, not the interior. Burial Chambers tend to sit near the border between Meadows and Black Forest. Stone ruins and skeleton activity above ground are your tell.
  4. Walk right into the crypt. The entrance is usually a stone archway. No key, no pickaxe, just go.
  5. Break the bone piles first. They keep spawning skeletons until they're gone, so handle those, then mop up whatever's left.
  6. Every wooden chest, no exceptions. Sharpening Stones spawn in chests inside these crypts, and they love hiding in corners. I once missed one by walking past a chest tucked behind a skeleton spawner.
  7. Smash the pots and urns anyway. Sharpening Stones don't drop from them, but you get coins, bone fragments, resin, and a clearer view of the room.

I hit the same wall on my first proper run. Bronze sword stuck mid-upgrade, no Sharpening Stone anywhere. So I quit hunting Greydwarves and started clearing every crypt I stumbled onto. The one that finally paid off had its Sharpening Stone in a wooden chest behind a skeleton spawner I almost walked right past.

No Fixed Map Coordinates

Valheim generates worlds randomly, so there's no universal coordinate. Don't expect a "Sharpening Stone location" marker to pop up. You're hunting Burial Chambers, not a fixed spot.

To speed that up:

Loot every chest in every Burial Chamber, then move on. You'll usually walk away with a Sharpening Stone after one or two clearouts.

Warning for new players: Don't wander into the Black Forest at night without the rested buff and decent food. Skeletons hurt more than anything in the Meadows, and Greydwarves will dogpile you if you're under-prepared.

How to Use Sharpening Stones to Upgrade Gear Fast

Got one? Now build the Grinding Wheel.

What I do:

  1. Have a Forge already placed somewhere. You need it to craft bronze, iron, and the rest of your metal gear anyway.
  2. Check that the Grinding Wheel recipe shows up. It appears in the build hammer menu under crafting stations once the materials are sitting in your inventory.
  3. Stand near the Forge and place the Grinding Wheel. It has to be close enough for the Forge to recognize it. You'll know it worked the second the Forge level number ticks up.
  4. Use the Forge to upgrade your weapon. Higher Forge levels unlock more upgrade tiers for bronze or iron gear.

Quick thing people miss: the Sharpening Stone isn't consumed on a weapon. It gets used once as the building component for the Grinding Wheel, and then the wheel stays forever. That Forge can crank out high-level upgrades from then on.

Warning for new players: Don't stash your Sharpening Stone in some random chest and forget about it. If you've got one, build that Grinding Wheel immediately. It's too important to sit in storage.

Enemy Drops: The Short Answer

Can you farm enemies for Sharpening Stones? Nope. No normal Valheim enemy drops Sharpening Stones reliably. Skeletons cough up bone fragments. Greydwarves drop stone, resin, and eyes. Stone Golems drop stone and crystal. If you're spending hours fighting mobs hoping one will drop a Sharpening Stone, you're burning time you could've spent looting a crypt.

The only combat angle is that skeletons guard the Burial Chambers. You'll still fight your way through, sure, but the Stones come from chests, not corpses.

Old guide telling you a specific mob drops them? Skip that farm. Stick to Burial Chambers.

Common Mistakes When Looking for Sharpening Stones

Everyone wastes time on the wrong thing at least once. I sure did. Here's what to avoid.

Mistake #1: Searching Too Early in the Meadows

The Meadows has stone ruins and small dungeons, but the real source is the Black Forest biome. If you're only checking abandoned huts near spawn, you could spend hours and walk away empty-handed.

Mistake #2: Only Opening the First Chest

A Burial Chamber can have several chests spread across different rooms. People pop the first one, grab the Surtling core, and bolt. Bad call. Sharpening Stones love the last room. Open every chest before you leave.

Mistake #3: Forgetting to Build the Grinding Wheel

Some players find a Sharpening Stone, dump it in a chest, and then forget what it even does. Don't be that person. The second you can build a Grinding Wheel, use the Stone. That single move boosts your Forge and unlocks the next quality tier on your weapon.

Mistake #4: Trying to Craft Sharpening Stones From Regular Stone

Normal Stone is everywhere, but you can't turn it into Sharpening Stones. No recipe exists. These are special loot items, so staring at glowing rocks or mining boulders gets you nowhere.

Warning for new players: Don't trek deep into the Black Forest hunting for crypts without markers. Hug the biome edge first. You'll spot more chambers and won't get lost.

FAQ: Sharpening Stones in Valheim

How many Sharpening Stones do I need?

One Grinding Wheel needs exactly one Sharpening Stone. Running multiple bases and want a fully upgraded Forge at each? You'll need more. But for your main starting base, one is the usual ask.

Can I buy Sharpening Stones from the merchant?

No. Haldor sells plenty of useful stuff, but Sharpening Stones aren't in his inventory. Don't make the trip just for this.

Do Sharpening Stones respawn in Valheim?

No. Looted Burial Chamber chests don't respawn. Take a Stone from a chest and it's gone from that dungeon forever. Valheim worlds are huge, though, and the Black Forest has plenty of crypts. Haven't found one yet? Keep exploring new chambers.

Where is the fastest place to find Sharpening Stones?

The fastest spot is the Black Forest. Find Burial Chambers, clear the skeletons, loot every wooden chest inside. Usually two or three crypts get you your first Sharpening Stone.

Once you know where to find Sharpening Stones in Valheim, upgrading gear stops being a guessing game. Skip the enemy farming, head straight for the Black Forest, clear a few Burial Chambers, and turn that Stone into a Grinding Wheel next to your Forge. That one upgrade hits harder and lasts longer on your armor — exactly what you need before you push into the next biome.
