Overview

The Burglar's Ring is one of the most useful combat rings in Stardew Valley. Its in-game description says, “The chance of finding loot is doubled.” In practice, it makes monster farming much more rewarding, especially when you are hunting Coal from Dust Sprites, Void Essence from Shadow Brutes, Solar Essence from Mummies, Bat Wings, Slime, and other monster drops.

The important thing to know is that the Burglar’s Ring is not sold by Marlon, not found in Mine chests, and not a fishing treasure. It is a reward from Marlon at the Adventurer’s Guild after you kill 500 monsters total. That means any monster you defeat in the Mines, Skull Cavern, Sewers, Mutant Bug Lair, or Volcano Dungeon counts toward the goal. You do not need to kill 500 of one specific monster. The Adventurer’s Guild is located northeast of Pelican Town, near the Mines entrance, and it is open from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

This guide explains exactly how to unlock the Burglar’s Ring, where to farm kills efficiently, and what mistakes to avoid.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

  1. Reach the Adventurer’s Guild. From Pelican Town, head north to the Mountain area, then go east past the Mines. The Adventurer’s Guild is the building on the path above and to the right of the Mine entrance. You can enter between 2:00 PM and 10:00 PM. Inside, Marlon stands at the counter and Gil sits by the fire.

  2. Check the Monster Eradication Goals. On the wall behind Marlon, there is a board listing monster eradication goals. These include goals for Slimes, Void Spirits, Bats, Skeletons, and more. Look for the goal labeled “500 Monsters.” Its reward is the Burglar’s Ring. The board also shows your current total kill count, so you can check progress without talking to Marlon each time.

  3. Kill 500 monsters. This is the main requirement. Any monster killed by you counts toward the total. Early on, the Mines are your best friend. Floors 1–39 have Green Slimes, Bugs, Cave Flies, and Rock Crabs. Floors 40–79 have Frost Bats, Dust Sprites, Frost Jellies, and Skeletons. Floors 80–119 have Lava Crabs, Fire Sprites, Red Slimes, and other dangerous enemies. You can also fight in the Sewers, Mutant Bug Lair, Skull Cavern, and Volcano Dungeon.

  4. Farm efficiently. Do not just wander randomly. Use the Mines elevator to revisit monster-heavy floors. Good early floors include 5, 15, 25, and 35. Dust Sprites on floors 40–79 are excellent because they drop Coal, and you will want Coal throughout the game. Enter a floor, kill everything, leave, and re-enter to respawn monsters. This is much faster than clearing new floors over and over.

  5. Claim the reward from Marlon. Once your total monster kills reach 500, go to the Adventurer’s Guild during open hours. Talk to Marlon. He will congratulate you and give you the Burglar’s Ring. Make sure you have at least one empty inventory slot. If your inventory is full, make space and talk to him again.

  6. Equip the ring. Open your inventory and drag the Burglar’s Ring into a ring slot. It works passively. You do not need to activate it. If you have access to the Forge on Ginger Island, you can later combine it with another ring, such as an Iridium Band or Lucky Ring, to keep both effects in one slot.

Tips and Strategies

  • Use Monster Musk. Monster Musk increases monster spawn rates. The recipe is obtained from the Wizard after completing the “A Curious Substance” special order. If you have it, drink it before farming kills. More monsters means faster progress toward 500.

  • Bring speed and healing food. Coffee, Triple Shot Espresso, Spicy Eel, and Crab Cakes help you move quickly and survive longer. Life Elixir is useful in Skull Cavern. You want to spend less time running and more time killing.

  • Use bombs in the Mines and Skull Cavern. Bombs can kill multiple monsters at once. As long as you get credit for the kill, bombs count toward the 500 total. This is especially effective in Skull Cavern, where enemies swarm you.

  • Target easy monsters first. Green Slimes, Bugs, Cave Flies, Frost Jellies, and Dust Sprites are fast to kill. Dust Sprites are ideal because they also drop Coal. If you are strong enough, Dangerous Mines can spawn more monsters, but they hit harder.

  • Equip survivability rings while farming. Before you have the Burglar’s Ring, use rings like the Vampire Ring, Savage Ring, Slime Charmer Ring, or Iridium Band. The Slime Charmer Ring is especially useful if you are farming Slimes for the 500 total or for the 1,000 Slime goal.

  • Check other eradication rewards. While going for 500 monsters, you may also unlock the Savage Ring, Vampire Ring, and other rewards. These can make future monster farming easier. Talk to Marlon whenever you complete a goal.

  • Combine the ring later. At the Forge in the Volcano Dungeon, you can combine the Burglar’s Ring with another ring. A popular combination is Burglar’s Ring + Iridium Band for glow, magnetism, and attack, or Burglar’s Ring + Lucky Ring for extra luck.

  • Remember what it affects. The Burglar’s Ring only affects monster drops. It does not increase ore from rocks, fish from fishing, crops from farming, or forage. It is specifically for monster loot, which makes it amazing for Coal, Slime, Bat Wings, Void Essence, Solar Essence, and rare monster drops.

Common Mistakes

  • Thinking you can buy it from Marlon. Marlon sells weapons and boots, but he does not sell the Burglar’s Ring. It is only a reward for the 500-monster eradication goal.

  • Going to the Adventurer’s Guild at the wrong time. The guild is open from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM. If you show up at 11:00 AM, the door will be locked.

  • Not talking to Marlon after 500 kills. The ring is not mailed to you automatically. You must visit the Adventurer’s Guild and talk to Marlon to claim it.

  • Having a full inventory. If all your inventory slots are full, Marlon cannot give you the ring. Drop something or store it in a chest first.

  • Assuming it guarantees double loot. The Burglar’s Ring doubles the chance of finding loot. It does not mean every monster drops two items. You will see more drops over time, not a guaranteed double drop from every kill.

  • Trying to wear two Burglar’s Rings. In single-player, you only get one Burglar’s Ring per save. Its effect also does not stack with itself. You can combine it with a different ring at the Forge, but you cannot stack two Burglar’s Rings.

  • Killing Slimes in the Slime Hutch for progress. Slimes in the Slime Hutch do not count toward monster eradication goals. For reliable progress, kill monsters in the Mines, Skull Cavern, Sewers, Mutant Bug Lair, or Volcano Dungeon.

  • Forgetting the 500 goal is total kills. You do not need 500 of one monster. Any monster counts. This means you can mix Slimes, Bats, Dust Sprites, Skeletons, and whatever else you find.

FAQ

Q: Can I find the Burglar’s Ring in Skull Cavern treasure chests or from fishing?

A: No. The only way to get the Burglar’s Ring is to reach 500 total monster kills and claim the reward from Marlon at the Adventurer’s Guild. It is not a random drop, shop item, or fishing treasure.

Q: Do monsters killed by bombs or in the Slime Hutch count toward the 500 kills?

A: Bombs and other player-caused kills generally count, as long as you get credit for the kill. Slimes in the Slime Hutch do not count toward monster eradication goals. For reliable progress, kill monsters in the Mines, Skull Cavern, Sewers, Mutant Bug Lair, or Volcano Dungeon.

Q: Does the Burglar’s Ring affect all loot, including ore, fish, and crops?

A: No. It only affects monster drops. It doubles the chance of monsters dropping loot, which is great for Coal from Dust Sprites, Void Essence from Shadow Brutes, Solar Essence from Mummies, Bat Wings, Slime, and other monster loot. It does not affect ore nodes, fishing, foraging, crops, or geodes.
